Mama Callie’s Louisiana Cajun Seafood restaurant offers the unique New Orleans style Cajun cooking experience usually offered during the world famous Bourbon St Mardi Gras Festival. The Menu is devised to give the customer the wide variety of mild to intense flavors to invoke the feel good experience of Louisiana.
JAMES CITY | MaMa Callie’s Louisiana Seafood Restaurant opened its doors about three weeks ago, bringing Cajun-style delights to Craven County, and the response so far has been strong. More than 200 customers visited the eatery on its Oct. 15 opening day, and the new restaurant continues to draw crowds. The menu includes crawfish, alligator bites, snow crab legs, blue crabs, shrimp and fish. Gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice also will be added to the menu when employees are trained to properly prepare the Louisiana Cajun-styled dishes. New Bern resident Veronica Canady recently made her fourth visit to the restaurant.
“I want to try other things, but I love the snow crab legs so much, I get them every time I come,” she said. “The price is very reasonable.” Husband-and-wife team Byron and Luscious Lewis own the business. Both are Marines stationed at Cherry Point. Luscious Lewis grew up living with her grandmother in Louisiana and learned how to cook at an early age. The restaurant is named after her grandmother, who was present on opening day to greet and talk with customers. Luscious Lewis said her cooking has always been popular with her friends, so opening a restaurant wasn’t too much of a stretch. “I would cook for my friends and other Marines a lot and they really seemed to love the food,” she said.
While eating at a restaurant in Washington, D.C., the Lewises decided to open their own restaurant. They started by taking a 10-week entrepreneur class at Craven Community College. “The class basically taught us everything we needed to know to start our own business,” said Byron Lewis, who was able to create a professional business plan from skills he learned. The restaurant is located at 701 U.S. 70 East in James City, not far from the interchange with the Neuse River and Freedom Memorial bridges. The couple felt this was the perfect location for their restaurant. “We didn’t want anything too small or too big, and many of our customers are Marines that travel from the Havelock/Cherry Point area,” said Luscious Lewis. “We felt this location would be convenient to everyone.”
The restaurant has created 18 new jobs for the area, including several part-time positions as well as managers. The Lewises are at the restaurant as much as possible, but because of their jobs as Marines, there are times when they cannot be there Luscious Lewis plans to retire from the Marine Corps in January. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
