April 25th 2007, 1:00pm in backyard in Lubbock
The PST came today. I mounted it on the ring's of my Orion ST120. It was around 1:00pm and the sun was at its zenith. Once I got the sun centered and focused I could make out small prominences near a sunspot at about the sun's 1 o'clock position with respect to the view through the eyepiece. At first the sun's surface details are not particularly impressive but eventually I could make out some of the filaments on the surface, these details come and go which I attribute to seeing prominences and flares head on. I switched eyepieces to my Meade UWA 5000 14mm with an improvement in the view of the prominences; I then noticed some impressive prominences at about the 8 o'clock position. I increased the magnification by switching to my 10mm Lanthanum and the view of these prominences continued to be quite good. If the sun where the size of an American quarter the first set of flares would extend out from the sun about the distance of twice the thickness of the rim around the quarter. Not very impressive but they were obvious. The flares at the 8 o'clock position were a different story they were at least three to four times the size of the 1 o'clock flares and appeared and disappeared within a 2-3 minute period.
