June 07 2007 out at Skyview (Gott Observatory)

I arrived before sunset, at about 8:30pm. I meet Tommy Stevens and spoke with him for a while. He lives out here with his wife Shirley near the observatory. It was in 1996 that I watched the Jupiter comet impacts through his wife's 12 inch Dob out at Clap park here in Lubbock. Tommy was scraping the road with his tractor and a scrapper of some kind when I arrived.

I'm observing with Colin, Neetu and Don. Colin has his 80mm ED on an EQ-2 and Don has his 12.5 inch Dob with its Meade primary mirror. I setup where I usually do before anyone else arrived and then found out that there were some concrete pads next to the building. Colin and Don setup over there. I looked a little through the 80mm and 12.5 Dob and was impressed with the color control of the 80mm and the light gathering capabilities of the Dob. Although it was clear seeing was pretty poor. Unfortunately there have been very few night for observing this year due to the rainfall we have been getting, almost a years worth alreay and its only June 7th.

I had my C8 setup and I was observing with the Meade 14mm UWA. 10:27pm I looked at M9, it's low in the sky but a nice cluster. It's also in the Lubbock light dome. M10 is a really nice cluster, 50 individual stars can be made out. M12 is smaller than M10 and fewer individual stars, maybe 15-20 stars can be made out. M11 is a more open looking type cluster, it is low in the sky. M14 might be a cluster but it looks like a fuzzy ball of light. I can't see M16 even though I can tell that I'm on it by the star pattern.

We all packed up and left at around midnight.
