Retirement Projects

Several building projects have been collected in advance of retirement where time will be available for more building and less money might be available for purchases.

The list, not in any particular order of how they may get built:

1/4 scale Balsa USA Cub (kit)

Purachased extra for this kit is a fiberglass cowl with dummy engines, however since the purchase a very good buy was obtained on a Saito 182 twin that will likely be the engine used.

Sterling PT-17 Stearman (kit)

This kit had belonged to a modeler who never got around to building it and was given to the club by his widow.  Club members took turns picking and it was my first choice as I've always been intrigued by the plane and the kit.  If getting around to building it, I'd like to go with the Robart struts and possibly the laser cut short kit available now.  I don't have an engine for this plane, it would possibly be a good candidate for a 15cc gasser.

Ultra Stick Lite 120 (arf)

This is a back up for the now discontinued (twice discontinued) favorite plane to take flying.  The stick is simple to set up and is a great fun plane to fly as it will fly aerobatics or put around like a Cub.   After crashing and doing a major rebuild because the plane had been discontinued, another run was offered for a short time so a back up was purchased.  The Ultra Stick Lite is an often sought plane and I can't imagine it not becoming available again.  I'd hate to be without one but will probably not build this one unless demise of current.

Nitro Models 1/4 scale Cub (arf)

This arf was obtained because it was simply too good of a buy to pass up.  Each time they come available, they quickly go out of stock so with some funds available from selling sailboat steering conversions, it was jumped on.  The likely engine for this kit is the MLD 28 gas that is on hand.

Nitro Models 72" Yak 54 (arf)

The Yak was purchased because of the Yak frenzy and because it was a good buy.  It will likely be powered by an Aero 28 cc gas.

Great Planes Super Stearman 1.20 (arf)

The Super Stearman was bought because it fits in my model size and was a great buy from Keith Tuckers sell out.  It came as a combo with a Zenoah G26 that fits the criteria of nose weight and power.

Seagull Space Walker II (arf)

Another 1.20 size plane, it was acquired because of interest in the plane.  Not sure how it will be powered yet but most likely a gas engine.

Sig Kobra (.30 size)  (kit)

This small kit went against my grain of phasing out of glow but it was simply a good bargain from Keith Tucker's close out.  A Webra .32 Engine was also acquired that will power it.  A grandson spotted the kit in my holy of holies closet and as he is now training, if he becomes proficient this plane will get built and likely become a flier for him.

1929 Travel Air 6000 (scratch build)

I've written about this plane a good bit so won't repeat all but will say simply that I fell in love with the lines of this plane after seeing it at a local air show and thinking it would be a great candidate for a scale build.  The seed sprouted and a desire to build it grew so a plan was sought.  A few months later, a ride in it and even a few minutes at the yoke offered a life thrill.   It of course is one of those planes that has never been kitted.  Plans were obtained and enlarged for a 1/6 scale build (98 inch wing).  Williams Bro Golden Era wheels and Wright Cyclone dummy engine have been acquired as well as the wood for a scratch build.  This will likely be my closest effort toward scale building.  Power will likely be 30cc gas.

Das Box Fly Bipe (kit)

This is an old kit given to me by Harold Vonzenden and Gary Webb in appreciation for being their RC instructor.  Framed up nearly thirty years ago it needs covering and flight prep of engine and radio.  A Saito .30 four stroke and transparent red covering were purchased from the Keith Tucker close out with this plane in mind.  It is reported to be a good flier.
