Anchoring Warning

The C250 has shown a history of straining severely at her rode when at anchor or mooring

Sailboats have a tendancy to hunt (sail back and forth and reach into the wind) while at anchor.  This can be a nuisance to sleeping on board and when the wind becomes strong ...  a danger.  Boats with increasing beam to length ratios and high freeboard such as the C250 with its 3:1 length to beam are subject to this.   The strain will greatly exceed the normal at anchor strain if the boat were vaned to the wind.   The increased strain of the sideways movement may drag or break out the anchor, or strain the bow cleat if the anchor fairlead is not used especially with the older composite cleats.

Take preventive measures when thunder storms may bring high winds. Set two anchors to reduce the ability to sail on the rode.  Two other helps are to use a riding sail and anchor bridle.
Together, they reduce the anchor hunting by about 80%.
