Furler Luff Carriers

The CDI furler is a good product but has at least one shortcoming, lashed against the mast, it will develop bad memory and mold to a crooked shape in those areas where it bends around things.  The furling drum also needs supported so that it doesn't droop.

One solution is to provide luff carriers which provide clearance particularly  to the running light and spreaders.

My first set were made from Trex (the new plastic type deck construction material), but they didn't survive the time test because of the fragility of the material.
Others have produced carriers using PVC pipe sections to form a saddle both for securing to the mast and receiving the furler luff.  Because the jib is never stored on the luff, storing the luff vertically was wanted because of less sag between supports, so a 1.25 inch pipe section was used for the furler luff.  The vertical spacer is 3/4 redwood but can be made from whatever is available and durable.  Both sections are more than half sections to produce a clamping effect holding the carriers in position.

As others have done, the lower three inche pipe saddle is lined with rubber shelf liner spray adhesived to the inside of the section to avoid the carrier from scuffing the mast.  I like having the bungee integral to the carrier so drilled a hole thru the spacer for a bungee with a stop knot.  The single hooked bungee simply hooks the bungee after wrapping both the furler luff and the mast.

The PVC design also yields more support length than the first set of carriers.
