OUR TRIP TO HARPER'S FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA, USA - NOVEMBER 5/6 2005

On November 5th and 6th 2005, we visited Harper’s Ferry’s in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Betty had read and enjoyed the book “Daughter of the Stars” by Phyllis A. Whitney. The story had been set in Harper’s Ferry and we thought it would be a great place to visit on the two days off that we finally had together. I was starting a new job on Tuesday and Betty had to work Monday.

We took Highway 79 to Morgantown and then 40 East through Maryland to Hagerstown. The scenery was beautiful for all the fall colors still displaying. I read the map wrong about what road to take to get to Harper’s Ferry from Hagerstown and we got a bit lost. Finally after dark we arrived in Harper’s Ferry and found a room in a hotel. Then we set off to explore the town. On Washington Street, to Betty’s delight, we found the Anvil Restaurant, which is the book. The place had a nice atmosphere but the prices were high. Next we drove around the historic part of town. The area, restored to 1860’s, was spooky at night.

The next morning we walked around the little town, taking pictures. We started to climbed the steps to Jefferson’s Rock but it was too windy and too far. Harper's ferry is where the Shenadoah and potomac Rivers meet. Also three states (Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia) touch here.

Later that morning we headed back home through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, hanging a right at Lexington and driving up through the Blue Ridge Mountains to Charleston.
