We copy the following sketches from "State officers and General Assembly of North Carolina" for 1893:
CLINGMAN W. MITCHELL
Born in Bertie county, Aug. 16, 1860, and at the age of six years moved across the line in Hertford county. His parents died in his early youth. First attended school at Elm Grove Academy and at the age of eighteen years entered Wake Forest, where he went for three and a half years, but had to leave five months defore graduating. Married Miss Pauline A., daughter of W. W. Mitchell, and has one son and two daughters living[.] In January, 1884, entered the merchantile business, in which he is still engaged together with farming, and has been very succe[s]sful in both pursuits. His farming operations are very extensive, usually making from fifty to one hundred bales of cotton. He has taken active part in church work, having been a deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church since before he was grown and for many years Moderator of Bertie Union Meeting and for many years Treasurer, but now Vice-President West Chowan Association and member Board Trustees Murfreesboro Female Institute, Served as Justice of the Peace four years and County Commissioner two years. In fall 1892, was nominated without opposition, and elected over Republicans and People's Party by fifty majority. Member committees; Education, Agriculture, Propositions and Grievances, Deaf, Dumb and Blind, Banks, &c., Enrolled bills and State University.
AARON S. RASCOE
Born near Windsor, in Bertie county, March 12, 1855. Attended school at Windsor Aca[d]emy up to the age of sixteen years, when he took charge of his store, where he has been engaged ever since having become his father's successor in the spring of 1881. Married Miss Lizzie Gillam October 17, 1876, and has one daughter living. Within less than two months after becoming twenty-one years was elected Mayor of his town, which position he has almost held continuously until he resigned to take the position in the House of Representatives, was unanimously nominated by the county Democracy, and elected over two opponents, a third partyite and a negro, by 604 majority, which is a high compliment to him, as the county ordinarially goes Republican. He is serving on the following committees: Finance, Education, Insane Asylums, Penal Institutions, and Claims, and is an attentive and excellent representative. Member of the Missionary Baptist church.
