There are two choices. To win, or to die trying.
Simple enough?
Yes, simple, but staggeringly true.
Those are the thoughts that are on the minds of Professor Danger Danny Boyd and Death Falcon Zero as the pair’s match vs. arch-enemies Mr. Black and the Scufflin’ Hillbilly quickly approach.
Oh, yeah, and to add a little pressure to the equation, the tag team titles are on the line.
There are just a couple days now until the AWA-APEX Wrestling’s September to Dismember event kicks off at the Davis Fine Arts Theater at West Virginia State University in Institute.
And, as one can tell, losing is NOT an option.
But, Professor Danger and the Death Falcon — collectively known as the Grapes of Wrath — are ready for the challenge.
“We have wrestled these guys many times before,” said Professor Danger, who is a real-life professor at West Virginia State University. “This time it is for the titles. This time it could get bloody.”
Bloody, yes, but for Professor Danger, this is the culmination of a long journey.
“Since may of 2005, we have been on a journey that ends on Sept. 8,” Danger said. “This is the culmination of a journey that I have taken. I was forced into wrestling. I went to take my family to a regional show.”
“I was forced into the ring,” Professor Danger continued. “I had some success, but I also had some incredible humiliation. I just couldn’t go through the rest of my life without having some kind of retribution. I feel like I have something to prove. But, I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so, I recruited probably the most evil barbarian in the business — Death Falcon Zero. The price wasn’t that high, booze and broads.”
Booze and broads, yes, but the tag team has had a lot of success. Since forming in 2004, the pair have worked more than 60 matches in three state for five different wrestling federations.
It’ll take all that experience and knowledge to take control of and beat the tag team champions.
“I don’t really consider myself as being evil,” Death Falcon said. “I really did get into professional wrestling for the booze and the women. And, believe me, you get a lot of mileage with women being a professional wrestler.”
“And, let me tell you, you get even more mileage out of wearing a mask,” Death Falcon added. “And they like to do it when I have the mask on. I bet they’ll like it even better when I’m wearing the tag team championship belt around my waist.”
All chiding aside, though, Professor Danger and the Death Falcon are taking this match very seriously.
“Good guys finish last in this arena,” Professor Danger said. “I’m turning 50 years old — I will never have great physical skills. I have to rely on my greatest asset — my infinite mind — to conquer this frontier that is the greatest test of mind and matter. And, when my infinite mind falters, the Death Falcon’s ‘matter’ prevails.”
And, with great reverence and drive, the pair will prevail, or die trying.
As for AWA-APEX Wrestling, it isn’t some mamby-pamby, watered-down league for washed-up, has-been, muscle-bound morons.
It’s quite the opposite. The league has one of the richest pro wrestling legacies, boasting former champions like Verne Gagne, Jerry Lawler and Hulk Hogan.
Speaking of legendary wrestlers, The Midnight Express — Beautiful Bobby Eaton and Lover Boy Stan Lane — will be in the house on Sept. 8, too.
And, to top it all off, two more title bouts are on the card. The AWA World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line when champ Ric Converse takes on Flex. In the AWA lightweight title match, champion Krazy K will square off against Jason Kincaid.
Admission to the event, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will be $7 for the general public, with WVSU student getting in for free with a student ID.
