Achievement Rewards Program Kicks Off to Reward Hard Working Students
February 2012

On February 24, ARCDC students gathered in the auditorium to learn about a new program that would reward those who work hard to improve their attitude, academics, and behavior between March and May.

Spearheaded by Ms. Margaret A. Brown, a committee had been working on implementing additional rewards to motivate students since the fall. Mr. Mellinger and Ms. Davis from the Center for Better Behavior, the Administrative Team, and various teachers had input into the program. Mr. Calvin O'Neal eventually took the reigns of managing the program, along with coordinating with the sponsors, Word of Faith Church and Rivers of Life Church.

Dr. Rev. Rick Layton and Rev. Lance Alexander joined Ms. Brown, Mr. O'Neal, and Mr. Chris Long during the assembly to explain how the program would work and to hand out some prizes to students who have done an outstanding job already this school year.

Students will have the opportunity to earn 6 points in each of their classes daily for a total of 42 points each day and 210 points per week. One point is earned for attendance, one point for being in correct uniform, two points for completing all academic assignments, and two points for good behavior. Students begin at Level I and have to earn additional levels, which have increasingly valuable prizes available as they go up. To earn Level II, students must receive 315 points (75% of the possible points). To earn Level III, students must receive 672 points (80%), and to earn Level IV, students must receive 1250 points (85%). Point totals are based on full weeks, so the percentage of points will change the needed totals for students who enter the program later. Students must also maintain their levels if they want to remain eligible for prizes (158 points per week for Level II, 168 points per week for Level III, and 179 points per week for Level IV).

The sponsoring churches have challenged their congregations to provide prizes for the students who show the ability to achieve and maintain their points. Below are some of the prizes that will be available:

- movies on campus
- haircuts by BosMan's barbers
- $10 gift cards
