Old Home Place

It’s been ten long years since I left my home

In the valley where I was born

Where the cool fall nights made the wood smoke rise

And the foxhunter blew his horn

I fell in love with a girl in the town

She promised that she would be true

I left my home in Charlottesville

And worked in a sawmill crew

Chorus:

What have they done with the old home place

Why did they tear it down

Why did I leave the plow in the field

And look for a job in the town

The girl ran off with somebody new

The parents took my pay

And here I stand at the old home place

Before they hauled it away

Chorus:

What have they done…
