How can I blank out my screen when people walk in or I leave my computer?
Right click on the desktop and select New followed by Shortcut. Type C:\WINDOWS\system32\scrnsave.scr. Next give the icon a name like "BLANK SCREEN." Anytime you want your screen blank just click on the icon. Any movement of the mouse will restore the screen. Neat!
My toolbar at the bottom has become double height. I can't reduce it back to a single line using my mouse double arrow. I can only increase height.
Right-click on an empty space on the toolbar and select Toolbars. Uncheck Quick Launch. Use the mouse double arrow and drag the toolbar to single width. Right-click on the toolbar again to Lock the Toolbar and add Quick Launch back again if you wish.
Put an icon on your desktop for MS WordPad
Why? Because WordPad opens faster than a full word processor. Use it to edit text in an e-mail message by copy/pasting the text to WordPad before pasting it back in the message to send. Or use it to create short notes and letters. Save text in simple .rtf format so everyone can see it when you send it by e-mail. I use it every day. How to put an icon on your desktop: Go to Start/Programs/Accessories and right-click on WordPad. Select Send to, followed by Desktop.
Create a folder in your mail program called RECOMMENDATIONS and save messages there.
I hate tiny text on certain web pages. How can I enlarge it temporarily?

Open the web page and go to File, Send, Shortcut to Desktop.
My computer is not working. Who can I call for help and not spend a fortune?
River Bend has a volunteer PC Help Group. Before your PC fails, go to http://www.ci.river-bend.nc.us/pchelp.htm and print the list so you'll have it when your PC fails. If it has already failed give me a call at 638-7077 for names to call. You can be a volunteer on the list too!
How can I clean out unnecessary junk in my PC?
Go to Start/Run and type cleanmgr. This usually takes awhile so a better and faster way is to download free CCleaner available at http://www.ccleaner.com/. Be sure the file you download to run is ccsetup229.exe. I only select the option to put an icon on my desktop. When you run it use default settings. You'll be surprised at the megabytes it cleans out after you surf the web.
Is there something free that will remove malware from my PC?
Members in NBCUG discovered that free Malwarebytes finds and removes malicious software that other programs miss. Scan your PC with it when your PC is acting strange. Get it at http://www.malwarebytes.org/ It can be used along with your regular antivirus software.
How can I connect to Webmail?
Most every Internet Service Provider (ISP) has free Webmail for its customers. Many folks use it as their primary mail program instead of using a program in their computer such as MS Outlook Express. If you are dial-up this avoids having to spend time downloading big photos people send to you and also prevents viruses from entering your PC via e-mail. To find the address google your ISP name plus webmail. Example: "lpmonline webmail."
