Miscellaneous PC Comments

RIVER BENDER - July 2012

No particular topic came to mind this month except some miscellaneous comments.

The 1940 Census records were released on April 2 by the National Archives but you might want to wait awhile to search them because they're not yet indexed by name, but they're working on it. It's difficult to find someone now since you must identify the enumeration district in which they lived in 1940 and then browse the census population schedules for that enumeration district which is tough. Some of the census takers' handwriting is terrible and I can only guess that we must have stopped teaching penmanship in school years ago.

I hope by now hijacking of Yahoo addresses on the RBmail list has ceased. Fortunately, the bogus messages sent out almost daily were innocuous ads on how to make money online, but they may very well be scams. Solutions mentioned to stop the hijacking were to (1) change your email password, (2) remove RBmail from your contact list and (3) change to Gmail or another free mail server.

NBCUG members have repeatedly mentioned that free Malwarebytes is a good program to have in addition to your antivirus program because it finds malicious software that other programs miss. Google free malwarebytes to find the download webpage. Another popular freebee is CCleaner which I run daily to clean out junk in my computer.

Knock on wood, but I haven't been infected with a virus in years and all I've been using in 3 computers is free AVG antivirus, which probably most NBCUG members use. It's working though because on several occasions it detected a virus and notified me that it quarantined it. Google free AVG.

RBmail is not a moderated list and I'm glad there's no censorship because that's the way I started it in 1997 and I hope it stays that way. I am, however, dismayed with some of the childish statements folks make. Disagree, if you wish with what one says, but try not to make a fool of yourself by insulting them. Be respectful of your neighbors, regardless of how much you dislike them. Foolish comments are quite telling of the person sending them.

I don't know why but for some reason a few folks on RBmail never sign their email. One must go back and look at the sender's email address for a clue, only to often find something like dimwit102@yahoo.com. I hate to reply to a message with Dear Dimwit102.

Some folks still don't realize that RBmail has a 600Kbyte limit on size. If you're using Windows right-click on a large JPG file and select Open With, followed by Paint. When Paint opens select Image, followed by Resize/Skew. Try 50% reduction. If MS Paint is not on your open list click on Use Default Program and search for it.
