Miscellaneous Tips

RIVER BENDER - March, 2011

Here are a few tips I've been gathering, some of which you may already know about and some not.

Microsoft Fixit: http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/  This is a nice Microsoft support page that will automatically diagnose and repair common software problems in Windows, Internet Explorer or other Microsoft products. I hope everybody also knows about River Bend’s PC Volunteer Help Group when they have troubles. Click on "Links" at http://www.riverbendnc.org/

Coupon Bug: http://www.witn.com/couponbug Clip and print out store coupons. Works great. We use them. Become a member and receive a weekly coupon newsletter

Get new Google Earth 6.0: http://www.google.com/earth/index.html New features. Fly to any place in the world. See 3D buildings and terrain. We used Google Earth to see what Kandahar airbase in Afghanistan looked like where our grandson is stationed. Also look up your old neighborhood where you used to live. Be sure to click on "Street View" so you can look all around.

Create your own free Web Poll: http://www.sparklit.com/ I've been using this free site for years to create web polls on RBmail and NBCUG.

Resizing images for E-mail: http://www.codeplex.com/ImageResizer I have recommended free photo resizer CODEPLEX for years, however, there's another way you can accomplish almost the same thing using existing MS PAINT that comes with Windows. Simply display the photo in MS PAINT available at "Programs/Accessories" and select "Image", then "Resize-Skew" and enter the percentage you want to reduce the JPG photo to. I use this method to insert small photos within the text of e-mail messages. But the advantage of CODEPLEX is that lots of photos can be reduced for e-mail at one time by highlighting them.

Put an Icon on your Desktop: I thought everyone knew how to put an Icon on their desktop but I was wrong. To add an icon for a program listed "Start/Programs", right-click on the program and select "Send To" followed by "Desktop." You can do the same for a file. For a web page, select "File" at the top followed by "Send" and then "Shortcut to Desktop." If you don't like the Icon you can change it by right-clicking on it and selecting "Properties" followed by "Change Icon." Google "free icons" if you don't like the samples shown.

Create a web page with Google Sites: http://www.google.com/sites Thinking of creating a website? I use the MS FRONTPAGE editor so I haven't tried Google Sites but they keep adding such nice apps (application software) this site might be an easy way to create your first webpage.

Get online alerts from your BB&T bank: http://www.bb&t.com If you have a BB&T account you can have them send you an e-mail alert for numerous events by signing in and clicking on "Customer Service" followed by "BB&T Alerts." We receive e-mail alerts on all checks that clear the bank, deposits made and when an online statement is available.
