Occupation: Joan was awarded a PHTdegree from the school of engineering at Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan. [ PHT stands for Putting Hubby Through ) While Bernard attended school she held a full time accounting position with an interstate highway construction firm. She also performed the duties of mother and wife to the family.

She later applied her accounting experience to her work in the family business H. & I Wholesale.
