REPORTS

What's going on and things to think about

THE TARPON ARE HERE

They're here and some have been caught. Tarpon started showing up a couple of weeks ago just after the bait arrived in the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound. We don't have the large number of tarpons like years past, but the ones we have are big ones.....like an hours worth of fighting big ones. I need two people to fish the tarpon tournament with me on August 3. Give me a call and I'll tell you about it.

GET READY FOR THOSE BIG OLD DRUM

If you don't have your gear ready for the upcoming old drum season, you better hurry. A few have been caught, some nice schools have been seen, the water temperature is right and the bait is here. The question is will the next full moon on July 16 turn on the spawn and the influx of fish or will it be the next new moon on August 2. It's getting close. If you leave the docks for trout and flounder fishing anytime soon, don't leave without your old drum rigs. I still have a few open dates.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE SHEEPHEAD

About a year ago, one of the Marine Fishery guys told me about the nice sized sheephead on the artificial reefs in the Neuse River and the Pamlico Sound. I hadn't targeted them but made a note of it and decided to check it out. Well he was right. With a creel limit of 10 (yes 10 with no closures or reductions in sight) don't forget about these hard fighters. This 18" fish was caught on shrimp but fiddler crabs work great too.

I NEED 2 MORE FOR THE MOUNTAINS ON OCT 13-15

My buddy Connor here would love to hook you up on some nice rainbows and browns. If fly fishing for these guys don't interest you, then you can spin fish for smallmouth bass.

Upcoming Seasons to Plan Trips

Giant Bull Reds: August and September

False Albacore: October thru December

Weldon Stripers: April and May 2020

JULY FISHING

Topwater

Go early, real early. Its go catch your fish and then come home and have breakfast early.

Redfish

It's getting better around the river and back bays but still not what it should be. If you wants some slots, go to the marshes, flats, and backwater at the coast to increase your chances.

Old Drum

Get ready. We're close to hearing those drags scream.

Stripers

It's inconsistent. We hooked our best striper of the year last week but the numbers are still low. Mix your striper trip with trout and flounder.

Flounder

They're here. Concentrate on docks, points and areas of the river and marshes where the sand and the grass meet. Finger mullet are around. If you can net some, I like your chances even better.

Spanish Mackeral

They're still here and will be through the fall. Sight casting for them is my favorite but plenty are getting caught trolling.

Speckled Trout

They've been our staple for the past few months. As the water temperature rises, they'll begin moving to deeper water. Currently, they are great targets for topwater lures early in the morning. As the day continues, check out the drops and ledges.
