DECEMBER 2006

Captain Fred Slann, who owns Specrigg Charters Guide Service, was the Fishing Club’s speaker at our November 1st meeting in the Community Center. Cap’t Fred was able to show us via a video presentation specific locations where he has been successful catching fish with his clients. The 55 some members and 7 guests who were in attendance were especially attentive since Dan Thallman and Patrick Neal had planned a fishing tourney for  Saturday, November 4th. After his very enlightening and instructional discourse, Fred was kind enough to stick around after the meeting and show those interested members the various lures and tackle that have made him such a successful angler. Our speaker for the December 3rd meeting will be Paul Wachter, owner and operator of American Marine and American Fabricators located here in New Bern.  Paul will address specific questions concerning winterizing our boats for those who elect to leave them in the water or those who wish to dry dock. This will be a very timely and informative session with someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the pitfalls encountered by those of us who fall into either of the afore mentioned categories. You’ll definitely want to attend. For those of you who are interested in releasing your catch, member Red Herring reported that the proper release technique for a just-caught fish is to remove the hook from its mouth and, if necessary, revive it by holding it briefly in the water with its head pointed up current  until its gills start moving and it is able to swim away. If that fails, simply give it a light dusting with blackened redfish seasoning and show it a picture of Emeril Lagasse. Our meetings are open to anyone who is interested in fishing, learning how or where to fish, or just want to share some insights with us about the art of angling. We meet the first Wednesday of each month in our Community Center at 7:00PM. We always have a speaker or some sort of entertainment planned for each get together.

Bob Costa talked about his committee’s plans for the upcoming Christmas parade scheduled for December 4th. If you would like to join us for this fun event, please contact Bob prior to the march through the Harbour. Dan Patrick reported that even the non participants in the Nov. 4th fishing tournament were invited to Dan Thallman’s back yard for a picnic and riparian entertainment following this opportunity for Harbour bragging rights. Just remember a fishing tournament is defined as a journey undertaken by anglers to a place where no one can remember when the temperature drops below normal, the wind picks up to 30 knots and the fish suffer from lockjaw. The 50-50 raffle was won by Warner King.
