FHFC BEACON ARTICLE for MARCH 2007

A large school of anxious members and guests entered our Community Center on Wednesday night, February 7th to listen to Donald Willis Jr. speak on the new gear and tackle that is available at his establishment, Coastal Marine Fabrication. Upon completion he followed up his Q & A session with his views on the saltwater fishing license as well as the Coastal Conservation Association [ CCA ]. He was kind enough to leave most of what he brought for our attendees in the 50-50 raffle held at the end of our meeting.

Ron Zielinski reported that the Eastern Carolina Fishing Club will host a Red Drum fishing tournament on Saturday, August 25th. This will be a contest between our members and their anglers as to who has the best angling skills that particular day. Jerry Manfredi of our Club will work with Ron in planning this event. A sign-up sheet will be available for us at our next meeting. A meeting was held on February 15th to establish the ground rules for our hosting a fishing tournament with Big Brothers Big Sisters [ BBBS ]of Southeastern North Carolina. We will hold an auction to raise funds for this event which will probably be held on Saturday June 9th. That particular date falls within the celebration of National Take a Kid Fishing weekend across the country. Anyone interested in participating should contact either Dan Thallman, Elmer Stenzel or Bob Bruggeworth.

A few reminders: Those  who wish to have their boats inspected by the Coast Guard Aux. should contact either Jim Phillips or George Maravelas. Your NC fuel tax refunds can be done on-line this year as well as filing state form: Fuel Used Off-Highway Gas-1201. Salt water fishing licenses are required for Coastal waters this year which includes the Neuse, as far west as the Bridgeton RR bridge. These licenses cost $15 per year for those under the age of 65. Once 65 you can get a lifetime license for the same $15 or buy a combined salt/freshwater license for $30. Our August meeting has been moved to Thursday, August 2nd. as the POA needs our room on Wednesday the 1st. For those of you who are interested our new web site address is //pages.suddenlink.net/fhfc/

Our speaker for March will be the North West Creek Dock Master, Bud Ellis. He will be speaking to us about rigging techniques, boating safety and some navigation tips. Our 50-50 raffle was won by new member, Ray Harrison.

I’d much rather be fishing in a boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.      Author Unknown.
