FHFC BEACON ARTICLE for MAY 2007

How many Anglers have ever surf fished from 600 feet in the air? Well, on Wednesday evening, April 4th, Dr. Bogus (Richard Ehrenkauffer, Ph.D.) took us on an aerial fishing expedition from Bogue Inlet up the coast to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. He was in the airplane with Rudi Rudolph, Emerald Isle Shore Protection Manager and took some outstanding pictures of the sloughs, sand bars, beach nourishment, rock jetties and even Cape Lookout shoals. Dr. B, with the use of his laser pointer, was able to show all in attendance the best locations to fish and the reasons for expected success at each of the locations. Many guests were able to attend this session as they had read about the meeting content from the listing on our web page.  Dr. Bogus can be heard on the radio each Monday at 7:30AM on WTKF 107.3 FM and 1240AM.

Plans are being finalized for our Red Drum tournament with the Eastern Carolina fishing Club on Saturday, August 25th. Those interested in participating should call Jerry Manfredi and let him know if you intend to captain a boat or want to be included to fish on someone else’s boat. Jerry will have a full report at our May meeting including all the rules and fishing times. Bob Bruggeworth reported that our Big Brother Big Sister tournament scheduled for June 9th ( National Take a Kid Fishing Weekend ) looks to be a big success. Harvey Pye and Wayne Massetti have put together a great design for the commemorative tee shirts all the participants will receive. Tom Dalton, Larry Jones and Dan Thallman are putting  together a picnic at Red Sail Park following the fishing. Thanks also to co chairpersons, Ron MacLean and Harvey Pye, for enlisting sufficient sponsors for our tourney so that we can have a first class event for the kids with many nice prizes.

We have lined up the following speakers for the months ahead:

May 2, Captain Jerry Dilsaver, Staff Writer and Special Events Coordinator for North Carolina Sportsman Magazine.

June 6th, local Captain Harry Baldwin, our neighbor at the end of Broad Creek Rd.

July 4th, Pamlico Captain Phil Ambler.

August 2nd , Oriental Captain Gary Dubois.

Wayne Massetti and Bob Armstrong have agreed to team together for our 3rd annual Pig Pickin’ and auction at Red Sail Park on November 7th. Anyone who is interested in putting a program together for us should contact Bob Bruggeworth so it can be properly scheduled for a future meeting. All our meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM except our August meeting which had to be moved to the first Thursday and our November Pig Pickin’ which will begin at an earlier time of day. Anyone may attend any of our meetings and membership is a mere $10 per year. Keep up to date by checking out our web site: //pages.suddenlink.net/fhfc/ All future events and meeting speakers will be listed there for your convenience.

Our 50-50 raffle was won by Al Muenster who donated his half of the winnings to the Big Brother BigSister event on June 9th.

Trolling is the method of fishing in which a baited line or lure is trailed through the water from the stern of a moving watercraft in the forlorn hope that its motions will be so enticing to a fish that it will somehow overlook the fact that there is a large boat on the other end.
