FHFC BEACON ARTICLE FOR AUGUST 2007

The Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club met on Thursday for the first time ever in order to allow its members the opportunity to celebrate the 4th of July with the traditional family outings and fireworks displays. Gus Villanova began the program by showing everyone the excellent video CD he put together as a result of our Big Brother Big Sister fishing tournament we put together on National Take a Kid Fishing weekend, June 9th.  The CD will be sent to all the sponsors of our event and any member who would like a copy may get one from Gus.

Ron Zielinski and Jerry Manfredi explained the rules of the upcoming Red Drum fishing tournament with the East Carolina Fishing Club in New Bern. Each boat will pay a $25 prize fee, a $5 per angler fee and only four fishing rods per boat will be allowed. It is a catch and release tournament and cameras will be provided to each boat for recording their catch. The date is Saturday, August 25 at Whittaker Pointe Marina in Oriental from 2;00 pm to 10:00pm. Overnight docking will be permitted including water & electric for $10 a boat. Henry Fraizer, the owner of the marina, asked that each club make a donation to his favorite charity which is Heartwork, a youth center that is being developed locally for disadvantaged kids. Our club voted to donate $50 toward this worthwhile organization.

Larry Knapp showed everyone the new Faifield Harbour license plates that are accessible  to members for $10 each. Also tee shirts will be available  to all members that will be similar to the BBBS tees except they will be without a  logo on the back. Our 3rd annual Pig Pickin” has been moved from Wednesday October 3rd to Thursday October 4th,  so that our auctioneer could be on hand for this event. There will be much more concerning this picnic for members and their spouses and guests at our next meeting. Cap’t Gary Dubiel will be our speaker for the next meeting and is an expert on fishing the lower Neuse and Pamlico rivers. Gary was one of our main sponsors for the BBBS tourney. Some of our members have fished with Garyin the past and have been quite successful.

Our speaker for the evening was one of Oriental’s expert anglers, Cap’t Phil Ambler, who demonstrated his successful techniques through a hands on session as well as through several excellent video presentations.

Cap’t Doug Sinclair, one of our members and noted fly fisherman, had a  raffle for a brand new fly rod and a free ˝ day fishing trip  The proceeds ($102) will be given to Casting for Recovery, a fly fishing retreat for women either suffering or recovering from breast cancer. George Maravelas is the lucky angler who will fish with Doug using his new fly rod. George Hemingway won the 50-50 raffle.

Recent fishing successes in the Harbour include but are not limited to Red Drum, Striped Bass, Flounder, Bluefish, Croaker, Spots and of course those wonderful Garfish.

Catch-and release is one of the three increasingly common forms of no-kill fishing practiced by conservation minded anglers. The other two, in which fish are never actually caught in the first place, are known as “nibble-and-fib” and “lose-and-lie”   Source unknown
