FHFC BEACON ARTICLE FOR JANUARY 2008
Our December Fishing Club meeting was held in order to make our plans for
the coming year. After Bursar, Walt Meyer, reported that we were reasonably
solvent as we head into our fifth year of existence, we had the opportunity to
view the excellent DVD of our October Pig Pickin’ and auction that was produced
by John Lapotosky. We then launched
into the heart of the meeting which was designed to stipulate our 2008
activities. Our intent was to focus on three basic areas: Meeting speakers,
Group trips and External community activities. No one held back and there was
great participation by all in attendance. Some of the items we got universal
approval for were: Jimmy Price, Paul Wachter and Dr. Bogus as speakers. Group
trips to Parker Marine & Hatteras Yachts, an off shore head boat trip, fishing
trip to Ocracoke Island and more local Harbour fishing tournaments.
Externally, the membership
decided to host the Big Brother Big Sister foundation again this year on
“National Take a Kid Fishing” weekend in June.
January 5th is the date that George Poveromo and his SaltWater
Sportsman National Seminar Series will be at the New Bern Convention Center
beginning at 9:00AM and continuing on to 4:00PM. George was kind enough to send
us 6 video tapes of some of his past ESPN2 shows for our video library which
George Maravelas oversees. We also received two complimentary tickets for the
Seminar along with an official SaltWater Sportsman hat to include in our end of
the meeting 50-50 raffle. Our speaker for our 5th anniversary meeting
on January 2nd, will be our Neuse River Keeper and new Harbour
neighbor, Larry Baldwin. Our Bursars Walt Meyer and Harvey Pye will be on hand
in January to collect your 2008 dues. Those members who joined during the 4th
quarter in 2007 are paid up through 2008.
Our 50-50 raffle was won by Harvey Pye who took the cash and John
Lapotosky and Frank Spininger won the free passes to the Seminar while Geoffrey
Gable won the hat. Our Stewards for the 1st quarter in 2008 will be
Jim Cline, Dan Thallman and Joe Jones.

Live bait is defined as something slimy, smelly, or sickenning put on a
hook to attract fish, as opposed to something shiny, sharp, silly or stupid.
