FHFC BEACON ARTICLE FOR AUGUST 2008
It’s time to begin planning our next big shindig for the year. Yes
I’m referring to our 3rd annual Pig Pickin’ and Auction with our
favorite Huckster, Elmer Stenzel. The date will be October 1st
and our meeting that night will be at Red Sail Park. Everyone is invited to
attend including spouses, significant others and guests. The importance of
the evening’s festivities is to raise money for next year’s BBBS Take-a-Kid
Fishing Day. Everyone in the past has enjoyed the revelry of the evening and
the delicious food and beverages. The cost this year will be $6.00 per
person. Much more about this evening will be announced by our Chairperson,
Wayne Massetti at our next meeting on Wednesday, August 6th when
our speaker will be Cap’t Gary Dubiel from Spec Fever Charter Service in
Oriental. Cap’t Gary specializes in fishing Giant Red Drum in the lower
Neuse and Pamlico Sound. His inspiring talk will whet our appetites for our
2nd annual “Red Drum Challenge” which will be held on Saturday,
Sept. 13th and Sunday, Sept. 14th at Whittaker Point
Marina. Co-Chairs Ron Zielinski and Jerry Manfredi are putting it together
with the East Carolina Fishing Club whom we bested in our first tournament
held last year at this same venue. Hear all about it at the 8/6 meeting.
Also we will be showing our BBBS DVD and our Ocracoke DVD, both produced by
Gus Villanova, at our next get together. You won’t want to miss it.
Our speaker in July was noted bottom fishing expert, Cap’t. Ray
Massengill who explained the important nuances of bouncing sinkers off a
live bottom in 80 to 120 feet of water. Ray insists that good sized Grouper,
Red Snapper etc all can be had within 20 miles of the inlet.
Remember that Striped Bass fishing is now closed in all central and
southern waters in our State until October 1st. when new
regulations go into effect governing this fishery. We want to welcome new
member Robert Smith to our midst.
George Maravelas won the evening’s 50-50 raffle.
