FHFC BEACON ARTICLE FOR SEPTEMBER 2008

The Beacon deadline for the September issue is August 1st. Since our meeting won’t occur until August 6th, we won’t be able to include our new members and 50-50 raffle winner in this article. Other than that, it’s time to “wing it” so here goes.

Our speaker for the evening was Cap’t Gary Dubiel who lead an interesting discussion on Red Drum fishing in the lower Neuse and Pamlico Sound. August and September are the prime months for the Giant Drum to invade our waters and many of us want to take full advantage of this opportunity. Several of our members booked a trip with Cap’t Gary during this prime period to experience the joy of boating a 40 to 60 pound Red. Gary was presented a DVD of our Take-a-Kid fishing day and a Certificate of Appreciation for his donation of a five hour fishing trip for one of the Big Brother Big Sister youngsters who attended this  event. The DVD was shown to everyone in attendance and Gus Villanova, who through his wizardry, produced this magical moment [that] got a well deserved round of applause.

Upcoming events include our Red Drum Challenge which will be either scheduled for Saturday,  September 6th or 13th. This is the event where we get to see if we can again out angle our East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club friends as we did a year ago. October 2nd is the date for our Pig Pickin’ and auction to raise funds for next year’s Take-a-Kid fishing Day. Members are encouraged to bring fishing equipment to Red Sail Park so that our friendly “Huckster,” Elmer Stenzel, can auction them off. Our speaker for our September meeting will be Dr. Bogus who can be heard every Monday AM at 7:30 on 107.1 FM. He will be talking about fall surf fishing on Emerald Isle covering tackle selection, baits, tides and expectations of this season.
