Fishing Club

Neuse River Keeper Larry Baldwin kicked off 2009 with his presentation at the Fishing Club meeting about what’s happened in the past year to improve our water quality. He specifically talked about the River Watch program that is being headed up by Brian Westcoff, who like Larry, lives in the Harbour. They stressed the importance of keeping your eyes open while out on the water and reporting to them anything that could be a detriment to the environment.
The fishing pier now has two bench seats, built and installed by club members, Jerry Manfredi and Dan Thallman, who received kudos for their efforts. The club reimbursed both for the materials for the seats, as well as reimbursing Bill Hay, who built and installed the fish cleaning tables in November. If you haven’t as yet observed their craftsmanship, take the time to visit the pier at the end of Harbourside Drive.
Jim Cline, 2009 Big Brother Big Sister Take-a-Kid Fishing chairman, reported that our first meeting was set for January 22. Eighteen members volunteered to work on Spouse’s Night, to be held in early spring. Much more about these events will be reported at the February 4 meeting. Speaker that evening will be Captain Stephen Draughon, who charters the Bill Collector out of Morehead City. He will speak about this winter’s bluefin tuna fishery, as well as what we can expect this spring with yellowfin tuna.
Our meetings are open to all and we encouraged you to check //pages.suddenlink.net/fhfc/, the club website, for information from coming events to past Beacon articles. This is the best way to keep informed of what’s going on especially for those who don’t live in the Harbour. Welcome to new members David Rose, Jeff Sampson, Larry Norvell and Brian Westcoff. Bob Petritsch won the 50-50 raffle.
