On May 6, 55
members and guests attended the Fishing Club meeting in the Community
Center. Featured speaker was Donald Willis, Jr., from Custom Marine
Fabrication on Rte 70 East. Don spent most of his time showing the new
tackle he has in his shop. It was a multitude of every conceivable gadget
that an angler could dream of. Don left a majority of these items, which
were included in the 50-50 raffle. The highlight for most was his
explanation and demonstration of the fallacy of using the improved cinch
knot, a.k.a. fisherman’s knot, when tying tackle to the newer fishing lines.
Don showed how this knot slips and tackle can easily be lost along with the
fish on the other end. His recommendation is to use the uni-knot or a
Palomar, both of which work very well with the new lines.
Jim Cline talked about the upcoming Take-a-Kid-Fishing Day on June 6 and
some of the happenings that will make this year’s event the best ever. Bob
Bruggeworth reported on plans for a joint booth with the Big Brother Big
Sister organization for Neuse River Day, May 30. Jerry Manfredi is donating
a new rod and reel to be auctioned with the proceeds going to the Neuse
River Foundation. Be suretoattendandparticipate in our casting-forprizes
event. Manfredi reported that this year’s Big Red Challenge will be held
Saturday,August 29, in Oriental. Details will be discussed at the next
meeting. Harbour resident Jesse Garmin presented his plan for improving one
of the boat ramps in Northwest Creek.
The speaker for June will be Dr. Bogus who will talk about surf and pier
fishing and give an update on the new pier and Bogue Inlet. Dr. B., a.k.a.
Richard Ehrenkaufer, is on 107.1 FM every Monday at 7:30 am.
Jim Gottert won the cash in the 50-50 raffle and three other members won new
lures and tackle that Don Willis provided. Be sure to check our website,
