September 23, 2009

The program for September’s Fishing Club m e e t i n g was a series of four “how to” sessions at the Community Center. The first, conducted by Bob Bruggeworth, was in the parking lot where he demonstrated four different sized nets and how to properly use them to maximize one’s success rate in procuring bait fish. Back inside, Wayne Massetti demonstrated the proper method for snelling a hook, specifically the Lupton rig, primary tackle of choice when fishing for big red drum. Terry Meier spoke about flounder fishing in local waters with help from Elmer Stenzel who demonstrated the use of light equipment. Jerry Manfredi closed the session with an extremely interesting segment on testing fuel for ethanol. Jerry showed this can be done with minimum expense and is quite accurate.
Jerry Manfredi reported on the success of the Red Drum Challenge held out of Whittaker Creek Marina in Oriental. A total of $526 was raised and presented to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern North Carolina. He also reported the car wash and bake sale held in August raised over $1200 for BBBS. FH residents gave an additional $800 via the separate brown box appeal.
Wayne Massetti announced the October 7 meeting at Red Sail Park includes spouses; the third annual BBBS auction with ace huckster Elmer Stenzel will take place immediately following the picnic. Instead of a pig pickin’, Wayne has planned for burgers and sausage from the Bridgeton Butcher. The cost will be $8.50 per plate and will be supplemented with hors d’oeuvres and desserts provided by members and spouses. Reservation checks should be payable to FHFC and delivered to Massetti by October 3.
Many thanks to third quarter stewards Terry Meier and Jim Phillips. Fourth quarter stewards are Jim Goffert and George Maravelas. Lee Sterling won the 50-50 raffle.
