February Meeting

Our next fishing club meeting will be on Wednesday evening at 7:00PM at our Community Center. Our speakers will be Cap't Scott Wood, who operates Driftwood Charters, has 37 years experience fishing the Neuse and other local tribs. He fishes with Berry Bender and Team Redneb on a frequent basis and is a striped bass, speckled trout and red drum specialist. Berry will also join him at our meeting. Ed Wall's column last Friday in the Sun Journal featured Scott and mentioned some of his methods used  to catch coldwater stripers. A very timely subject for us as we go through these winter months. Hope to see you all there. If you haven't paid your 2012 $10 dues as yet, bring a check maid out to FHFC to the meeting.  Cheers, Bob

Fly Fishing Report

I had a scheduled trip to Eastern NC for my annual fly fishing event.  Fished near Blowing Rock and Banner Elk and bites were good early in the week on midges and prince nymphs.  Caught an "array" of 'bows and brookies in 'catch and release' waters. ~Mike Shannon

The Drum Are Here!

Evelyn Garey caught this citation Red Drum fishing with Gary Dubiel. She willingly admitted that her Dad, club member Tate Garey, "helped" her a little with the reeling. They were fishing with Tate's wife, Jennifer, and son, Grant. Since there were four family members, Gary Dubiel arranged for four fish to be caught.

Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish

Jim Rowan, Dennis Treubert, Larry Knapp, and Bob Prather fished  on Bob's Down Time along Shackelford. They kept ten Bluefish and three Spanish Mackerel. They threw a number of short (twelve inches or less) Bluefish back--a good thing since they were stopped by the Marine Patrol who boarded and inspected the fish.

Black Sea Bass

While fishing with Wayne Smith and Gus Villanova on HIS MISTRESS, Al Muenster caught this 2 lb 11 oz Black Sea Bass. They also caught approx. 50 to 60 Sea Bass but all have to be returned to the sea, including this fish, because the season on Sea Bass does not open until June 1.  We were able to keep 6 Trigger fish & 6 Spot Tailed Pinfish.

The Gus Report

Alaska Report

Gardenia Hull, Larry Knapp and Wayne Smith
with Coho Salmon and a Lingcod
caught offshore near Sitka, Alaska August 29.

Yes! It was about his size!

Wayne Smith and his 80 pound halibut in Sitka.

Gardenia, Larry and Wayne fished from the Alaskan Advantage fishing lodge with owner Tom Buckroyd. Two days before their arrival in Sitka, Tom caught the 332 pound halibut pictured below in a photo from the Sitka Weekend newspaper.

Island Fish

Larry and Betty Knapp recently fished with Captain Doug Rowe and his mate Greg on his 40 foot Hatteras, Fish Rowe, out of Georgetown, Great Exuma.

Larry with one of what Captain Doug likes to call the "rare, elusive Island Trout."  Most people call them barracuda.  Captain Doug is pictured below holding the Wahoo Betty brought to the boat after a good twenty minute fight. The Capt. estimated it at around 80 pounds. He prepared steaks and some pieces suitable for sushi which was later prepared at the hotel.

There's a great article about Doug Rowe and the Exuma wahoo on his site.

Citation Amberjack!

Bob Bruggeworth, Joey Freeman, Larry Knapp, Wayne Massetti, Harvey Pye and Dan Thallman fished with Captain Stephen Draughon and his mate, Wade on the Bill Collector Friday, April 30. They drew numbers to determine the order and going  through the cycle they all had fish, sometimes more than one at a time. The highlight was a fifteen minute battle by Harvey Pye to land a 56 pound amberjack on light tackle. That's well over the 50 pound requirement for a North Carolina citation! The sole mahi-mahi was caught by Larry Knapp.

A Spec Report

"Charles Denman and Frank Spininger with Speckled Trout caught between Massetti and Bruggerworth homes in the harbour."

It Keeps on "Rock"n'

The Rock continue to hit Bombers and MirrOlures on Upper Broad Creek. On Thursday March 25, this 22 incher weighted in at 4 pounds and 13 ounces. He tore a hook off a Bomber Long A but was still caught on the second treble. That's a Bomber Long A in his mouth.

Continuing Striper Action

Wayne Massetti and Larry Knapp with some of the Striped Bass they caught in a light mist Friday night on Upper Broad Creek. Bomber Long A's and MirrOlures did the trick. The largest fish weighted in at 5 pounds 11 ounces.

Yet More Striper Action

Wayne Smith reports he "caught this 23 1/8” Striper yesterday just above Hatteras.  Fooled it by trolling a blue/white Rapala with a feather.  It was returned to fight another day, of course.  Only fish that we caught.   We covered a lot of water both trolling and casting lures and jigs."

Continuing Broad Creek Striper Action

Wayne Pearson reports that he "caught this Rock this afternoon in upper Broad Creek. Can't tell you what kind of bait I used! LOL"

Broad Creek Striper Action

Schools of Striped Bass were in Upper Broad Creek Sunday night. Larry Knapp closed out February with this trio of 20 to 22 inch linesiders.  They hit a Bomber Long "A" on a very slow twitching retrieve.
