Pre-Tournament Citation

The fisherman smile at its best.

Joey Freeman caught this "Citation" Big Mama Red on Friday evening while fishing on Bob Bruggeworth's boat. The fish was 40" long and was estimated to be about 40 lbs. The Drum was released and it was tough to figure who was the most tired after the twelve minute battle.

Birthday Fish

Birthday Man and his tuna!Larry Jones went fishing on his birthday with his wife Dorothy. He caught a 10 pound tuna and together they caught seven red snapper, 2 sea bass and 1 porgy totaling 25 pounds.

Nice haul!

Black Drum and More

Elmer Stenzel took some guests from Raleigh fishing on Spring Creek Saturday and caught "a bunch of Black Drum, Croakers, & Puppy drum."

Puppy Drum

Bill White picked up a very nice 20 inch Puppy in Northwest Creek on July 17 using  a soft plastic bass assassin.

King Salmon

Wayne Smith was up to his usual tricks with this beautiful King Salmon. He reports: "Attached is a picture of me with a nice King Salmon caught off Sitka Alaska last week.   The kings ran 20-45 lbs. We had 12 guys at a lodge fishing on 2 boats, fished for 3 days for king (Chinook) and silver (Coho) salmon, halibut and rockfish.  Did pretty well considering that the silvers had not yet shown up.  Each guy brought home about 50-60 pounds of fillets.  YUM!"

Your humble web site editor must report he has not tasted any.

Back Yard Striper

Elmer Stenzel caught a nice 22 inch Striped Bass from his dock using a small Pinfish.

As he reported, "tough to have to release this beauty!"

He had to release it because the season is closed July 1 to October 1.

Local Puppies

Bob Bruggeworth reports: "This 20" Puppy took a piece of crab for his brecky this AM. He wasn't the largest fish of the day as I also landed three Stripers; the largest one was 22 inches but the season is now closed 'til 10/1. So the Stripers were released along with two other small Puppies. Also caught were two of Gus's favorite sport fish, 9 inch Spot."

Broad Creek Flounder

On Sunday, Larry Knapp drifted a three inch baby croaker from his dock and caught a fifteen inch flounder.

Take-A-Kid-Fishing Update!

Jeffea waited patiently at the picnic following the Take-A-Kid-Fishing event. When her turn came, she ignored the tackle boxes and went straight for the envelope and a fishing trip with Capt. Gary Dubiel!

Well, she didn't waste much time in contacting Gary and arranging a trip! As Gary reports:

"I had Jeffea, her two sisters, and their great aunt out today for the take-a-kid-fishing trip.  The girls landed about a dozen puppy drum including this over-the-slot fish.  They were able to take their limit of 4 home for dinner and a 17 inch flounder to go along with the meal.  They all had a great time!" Capt. Gary

Talk about smiles & enthusiasm for fishing!
Thanks Capt. Gary!

Larry reported, "We had a great day, and the six of us totaled 25 pounds of red snapper, sea bass, trigger fish, and porgies."

Striper Report from Bob Bruggeworth

"Timing is everything! From April 1st to May 31st there was a 18" minimum size limit and no fish between 22-27 inches allowed in inland waters.

Effective July 1st. recreational striped bass fishing will be closed in all central and southern waters in NC. The season will open again Oct. 1 through April 30. No striped bass can be taken between 22" & 27" in waters classified as joint or inland. and the creel limit will change from 3 to 2 per person. So in 5 days there will be no striped bass kept in the Harbour that measure between 22 and 27 inches long until the rules change again.

Well this one was caught this AM (6:30) [June 26] and was 24" long. He was caught moments after I released a 17" fish."

Bob & Mary Bruggeworth, John & Barbara Harris, Wayne & Kay Massetti, Larry & Betty Knapp, Jim & Ellen Pettigrew, Harvey Pye & Cindy ,Snyder,  Gene & Judy DuPree, and Joe Barin & Elsie Moore spent the week of May 19 at the Ocracoke Harbor Inn on Ocracoke. Gus & mary Villanova stayed through Wednesday.

Three boats made the crossing: Bob Bruggeworth and Larry Knapp on the Old Salt, John Harris and Gene DuPree on the Joba3; and Jim Pettigrew and Wayne Massetti on the Melinda.

They had a great dockside BBQ Monday night with Jim & Judy Cline joining the group from a nearby campground. Competitive fishing from the dock was Tuesday's activity with spot, pinfish, croaker, and flounder being targeted. On Wednesday the group went fishing inshore at Teach's hole. Finally, a productive day of trolling for Spanish Mackerel offshore took place Thursday when the weather finally cooperated.

CLEAN WATER LOBBY DAY Message from Larry Baldwin

It’s that time of year again.  CLEAN WATER LOBBY DAY is on Wednesday, June 4th.  For those who may not be familiar with this event, on Clean Water Lobby Day (CWLD), environmental groups, including the NRF, come from across the state of NC to meet with our Representatives and Senators to encourage them to protect the waters of this state.  This is a trip that is both fun and rewarding, and can be very educational as well, as we get to see our legislators “at work” in the state capital.

There are several topics that will be the focus of CWLD this year, including Drought, Stormwater and Steep Slopes.  Obviously, the first two are of great interest to the NRF and the Neuse River.

It is my hope that we can get a very large contingent from the NRF to make the trip again this year.  For the past 3-4 years (I have lost track), the NRF has been the recipient of the “Riverkeeper Cup” Award for the organization having the most people attend CWLD.  And while the award is far from being the reason to go, it is an indication of the dedication of our volunteers.

The schedule for the day while in Raleigh is as follows:

·         9:30-10:00: Morning Briefing (NC History Museum Auditorium)

·         10:00-10:30: Streaming, including hearing from a friendly legislator

·         10:30-2:30: Lobby Visits

Tentative: (from 2:00-2:30pm) a large group of individuals going into the gallery when session starts to be recognized as a Clean Water Lobby Day participants.

  • 2:30-3:00: Debriefing (NC History Museum Auditorium)

We will be traveling to Raleigh by bus (at no charge to you as a participant).  We will leave a location in New Bern (to be determined) at 7:00 AM SHARP, so as to arrive for the 9:30 Briefing.  We should arrive back in New Bern by 5:30-6:00 PM.

If you have not participated in a CWLD event in the past, don’t let that dissuade you from going.  If you feel that you are not well-versed on the topics, don’t let that dissuade you from going, as we will educate you on the way.  If you have never communicated directly with legislators, don’t let that dissuade you from going, as you don’t have to speak if you don’t want.  Your presence there will send a strong message to our legislators.

This really is a great event, and aside from the real purpose of the event, you will have fun on the trip up and back getting to know some other NRF members and volunteers.

Please respond to this email to let me know if you are going, or call Pat at the NRF office at (252) 637-7972.  Let us know how many there will be, because we want you to bring a friend also.

I look forward to having you join us.

"A river is powerful because many drops of water have learned the secret of cooperation."

Flounder

Marty Fogel caught a fifteen inch flounder weighing 1 pound 1 ounce while visiting Larry Knapp on Upper Broad Creek. He picked it up about five yards off the shoreline grass opposite the pilings (the other side
--not Elmer's secret spot).

Bluefish on His Mistress
(Sung to the tune of "Lipstick On Your Collar")

On Thursday, May 1st, Gus Villanova fished for two hours on his boat at an inshore wreak by himself and caught seven Bluefish in the 7 to 9 pound range. There was no explanation for why he was alone.

The Gus Report

Bob Bruggeworth, Gene Dupree, and Larry Knapp went 30 miles offshore with Gus on Wednesday looking for tuna. The weatherman was wrong and things were a bit rougher than forecast.  They did troll a 16 1/2 pound Amberjack, but nothing else.

South Carolina Largemouth

John Radtke and Bob Costa  went down to Bob's son's place in South Carolina last Wednesday and Thursday. Bob caught an 18 1/2" Largemouth on a yellow/green spinner bait and John caught a 23" Large Mouth on a root bear colored Chatterbait

Yet Another Very Nice Speckled Trout

Just as it was getting dark, this 4 lb 23 inch spec was still able to pick out Wayne Massetti's Mirro-lure Monday evening. It looks like the fish put up quite a fight!

The Speckled Trout Won't Leave

Bob Bruggeworth caught this Spring Creek Speckled Trout just before Charlie arrived looking for breakfast. It was 21 inches and fell for a live minnow. Below, Charlie cruises by another minnow under the Bob's bobber on the right. It appears minnows are not worthy of Charlie's appetite.

Still More ReSPECt, Pt. 2

Brad Kimrey caught this 25 incher on an x-rap near the tennis courts.

Still More ReSPECt

Wayne Massetti with his Citation Trout caught a day after Bob's. He nailed it Monday morning at 10 AM.  Custom Marine measured it at 28 inches with a weight of six pounds.

Wayne tells us, "Funny because I lost him about 10 minutes earlier but he hung around for a second try."  Rumor has it that the Sam & Omie's shirt may have played a role.

A Very Re-SPEC-table Trout!

Bob Bruggeworth caught a Citation size Speckled Trout Sunday, April 20. It measured 25 inches and weighed in at five pounds, four ounces. Bob said the Spec "hit a 3 inch Storm lure, rainbow color, at 6:30 am before the rain hit. I was going to go out on the boat but after hearing the thunder I decided to fish from the dock."

Fishing Club Spring Tournament

The season's first fishing tournament, hosted by Bob and Beverly Costa on Saturday, April 12, was a great success. Twenty seven anglers headed out early in the morning.  Despite some pretty gusty winds, some boats went as far afield as Goose Creek looking for the winning fish.

The winner in Category 1  (Striped Bass/Minimum length 18”) was Larry Knapp with a 22 inch rock caught trolling a Bomber from Wayne Massetti's Rx 2 Sea near the Shoreline pool.

The Category 2 winner  (Large Mouth Bass/Minimum length 14”) was Bob Costa'a son with a 14 inch Largemouth.

Category 3  (Speckled Trout/(Minimum length 12”) was captured by Wayne Massetti with a 19" Spec. This fish also fell for a Bomber.

Wayne Massetti and Larry Knapp with their winning fish.

Costa released his Largemouth and no photo was taken.

The three three winners split $180 in prize money.

Libby White won the Lady's Division of the Tournament.

More pictures are available here.

Pre-Tournament Warm-Up Specs

Bob Bruggeworth tells us, "In a tune-up for Saturday's event, These two Specs were taken from my secret spot using very secretive baits. The big one was 22&1/2" long and weighed 3.65 lbs."

A "Slot Puppy Drum" and a Flounder on Broad Creek

Larry Knapp was out on the dock before the rain hit Saturday and picked up a twenty-two inch Puppy Drum and a fourteen inch flounder. Both were on live minnows and a #4 circle hook.
As Capt. George Beckwith explains: "I know it's confusing, but I call puppy drum anything under 27 inches, anything between 27 and 40 inches are yearlings, and everything over 40 inches, a citation, is an old drum." So one way of looking at the Neuse nomenclature is that there are Puppys under 18", Slot Puppys 18" to 27," Yearling Drum 27" to 40", and finally Old Drum over 40".

Not One but Two Flounder and Three Puppies

Elmer Stenzel had a great time from his dock Friday. He brought in these two nice flounder (sixteen and seventeen inches). He was trying out Jimmy Price's much touted and highly successful "Drop, Lift, and Crank" technique as explained and demonstrated at the Club's Wednesday night meeting.  He also had three Puppy Drum in the 15-16 inch range and a Bow Fin that broke his line.

A Sunny and a Trout

Jack Betz's granddaughter

Elise with her first catch ever.  She caught this Sunny on her second cast from the bulkhead at Jewell Ct. Monday.

His daughter Caroline with the trout she caught on a MirrOLure later that afternoon from Jack's boat near the golf course.

Yet More Specs

Bob's Spring Creek action hasn't let up. Here are his latest 17 inch Specs.

Each took a large minnow which was live lined on a #4 Circle hook.

March Puppy

Elmer Stenzel's son Greg caught this 18 inch Red Drum using shrimp. The fish was released.

Catfish

Jack Betz sent us a photo of the 18" catfish he caught from his dock on Jewell Ct. Friday, March 14th, at 10 AM.  on a  MirrOLure.

More Specs

Bob Bruggeworth caught this 20" Speckled Trout on a Storm lure when he decided "to wing a few" while he was outside grilling. He had two others in the 13-14" range that he threw back. So the Specs are still in the harbour and Spring Creek.
Florida Report

Elmer Stenzel caught these Speckled Trout recently in Florida.

Below, he tells us are "Two (Old!) FHFC guys w/ a couple sheep's head caught in Florida in February."

Harbour Update

Bob Bruggeworth reported Thursday that "Last evening's fish consisted of a 19" Spec and a 21" Striper. The Spec took a Mullet strip bait at 6:30 and the Striper hit an artificial Storm Shad at 7:00. Also netted 11 large Menhadden as huge schools were leaving the Harbour."

More SPEC-ulation

Bob Bruggeworth reports, "On Sunday evening between 5:30 and 6:30, Seven Specs were caught on a 3" Storm Wildeye Swim Shad (Rainbow Trout color). It appears the Trout got tired of Tennis and moved over to the South Bank for a feed." He only kept the four that were between 17 and 20 inches in length.

More Tennis Court Speckled Trout

In Mike Daly's own words: "Trout must like tennis because they were there last night and again this evening. Just caught these two."

Why aren't more people out there fishing?

Neuse River CCA Banquet

Tennis Court Trout

Mike Daly had a good catch of Speckled Trout off the tennis courts between 5 and 6PM Wednesday.

He used a 3 inch red-back Mirrorlure. How did he know they were there? "The pelicans and sea birds were a good omen!" he told us. It's always good to see the birds working.

New Flounder Restrictions

Dr. Louis B. Daniel III, Director, Division of Marine Fisheries, announced that effective at 12:01 A.M., Saturday, March 1, 2008, the following restrictions will apply to the taking of flounder for recreational purposes:

It is unlawful to possess flounder less than 15 ½ inches total length taken from internal and Atlantic Ocean fishing waters for recreational purposes except as specified below:

In  PAMLICO SOUND, no person may possess flounder less than 14 inches total length taken from internal waters for recreational purposes west of a line beginning at a point on Point of Marsh in Carteret County at 35° 04.6166’N – 76° 27.8000’W, then running northeasterly to a point at Bluff Point in Hyde County at 35° 19.7000’N – 76° 09.8500’W.   In Core and Clubfoot creeks, the Highway 101 Bridge constitutes the boundary north of which flounder must be at least 14 inches total length.

Trout Tournament

Broad Creek Red

From his dock on Broad Creek, Larry Knapp had a Puppy Drum hit a Gulp Root Beer Mullet on a red jig.

The fish was 23 inches and 3 ¾ pounds

The "Gus Report"

On Monday, Bob Bruggeworth and John Hoppe fished with Gus Villanova on His Mistress and kept  19 big sea bass, 4 black grunts and one flounder out of the day's catch. They also had a 16" red snapper was thrown back along with a 21" grouper. The biggest sea bass weighed in at 3lb 4oz and was 19" long. The flounder was 21" and weighed 3lb 12 oz.  They're holding one of the grunts, a sea bass and the flounder above

Dan Thallman and Wayne Smith were out with Gus the day before and had a nice catch of 17 Black Sea Bass awaiting the fillet knives of Dan and Wayne below.  Gus insists that he was leading by example as he hauled in 2 keeper bass at a time as Dan and Wayne grappled with good sized sharks and undersized bass until they used up all of Gus's hooks! They fished about 25 miles south of Beaufort Inlet in 80' of water on a beautiful day on the ocean.

FHFC at the Saltwater Sportsman Fishing Seminar

The club had a good turnout for George Poveromo and the opening session of the Saltwater Sportsman National Seminar Series at the New Bern Convention Center.

RiverWatch Program

Larry Baldwin tells us that RiverWatch is a volunteer program which will utilize the eyes, ears and noses of people on and off the water to help identify pollution sources or problems.  Volunteers will be trained to identify potential environmental violations as they relate to water quality.

The first training session on February 2 is scheduled from 9am to noon at the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church at 2304 Highway 70 East. This location is in James City. Take US 70 to East Grantham Road (the next light south of Airport Road). Turn to the east on East Grantham, then immediately turn right on the service road (NC 1153). The church is 200 yards on your left. Turn into the driveway, and drive past the sanctuary to the two-story building to its rear. That's where the class will be held.

If you are interested in joining RiverWatch contact Jim Starr, the RiverWatch Coordinator, at jhstarr@gmail.com or call him at 252-637-4580.

You can also call the Neuse River Foundation office to let them know if you will be there.  That number is (252) 637-7972.  Ask for the  Office Manager, Diane.

"Get Hooked" Fishing School

Club friends Dr. Bogus and Captain Jimmy Price are among the teachers at the "Get Hooked" Fishing School being sponsored by the North Carolina Aquarium and Sea Striker. It's a one day course on March 15 at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium five miles west of Atlantic Beach.

Major Changes at Bogue Inlet

Dr. Bogus sent us two aerial photographs taken January 5 that show major shifts in the shoals and sandbars.

Christmas Eve Specs

It's never too late to see some nice fish!

We just received this photo of Bill White's Christmas Eve Speckled Trout.

Bill tells us he got them "in the harbour" about 5 PM.

They were twenty-four and twenty-six inches long.

Spring Creek Stripers

Frank Picco caught two stripers Sunday January 6 in Spring Creek. One was 4 1/2 lb at 21 1/2 inches and the other was 15 1/2  inches at 2 1/2 pounds. He got them about 3 PM.

Black Sea Bass

Wayne Massetti and Larry Knapp joined Gus Villanova on His Mistress over the weekend. They caught over thirty Black Sea Bass and had ten keepers along with a Captain's Choice. The largest bass was 18 inches and 3.3 pounds.

Bob Bruggeworth and Bob Armstrong "reported" eight more fish with Gus the following day.

Tagged Striper

Elmer Stenzel and his son had a productive Christmas Eve. day. The Striper was  20"  and their two trout measured 16 1/2 & 17 inches respectively. The striper was tagged and earned them a hat from the Division of Marine Fisheries.

The Grays are Mixing in with the Specs

Kirk Brandon caught this 5 1/2 lb. Gray Trout  (aka Weakfish) on a Rapala while trolling North West Creek from his boat, Ki-Barb.

The Specs are Still Here

Geoffrey Gable caught the 5 lb. Speckled Trout fishing at South Creek in Aurora using a Mirror Lure. He also caught three others from 2 to 4 lbs. while fishing with Randy Hodges on his 21' Sea Pro.

Spring Creek Striper for John

John Trubiano trolled Spring Creek on Saturday and caught  this nice Striper on his Bada Bing. John was using a half ounce Rattle Trap with a red head. The fish was 22 inches and 3 1/2 pounds.

Another Spec

Aric Bruggeworth with the 19 1/2 inch Speckled Trout he caught in You-Know-Who's backyard on Spring Creek. (If you really need a hint, look below at the 22 inch fish.)

Really Nice Trout

The Speckled Trout are most definitely in the Harbour. Saturday afternoon, Bob Bruggeworth caught a near citation size trout from his dock. Using a Mullet strip he brought in a 22 inch fish that was officially weighed at 3.85 pounds--.15 short of a North Carolina citation weight.

Why He's Dr. Bogus

Bob Bruggeworth, Larry Knapp and Wayne Massetti dicided to take advantage of the great weather Wednesday and headed to Bogue Point for some surf fishing.

They met Dr. Bogus for breakfast and he showed them the three speckled trout he had already caught. The three Fairfield anglers then headed for Bogue Point. Bob and Wayne caught some flounder but the action seemed slow. Then Dr. B arrived and within minutes caught a Red Drum . . . then another!

So of course people assumed that was THE SPOT.  As other people fished the spot where Dr. B caught the two Red Drum, Dr. B. drifted off down the beach, where he caught yet another Red Drum.  Then, after working his way back up the beach, he stood next to Larry Knapp, made a cast, and promptly caught a nice surf-sized bluefish. He chatted a bit and left the beach.

It was a real (reel?) clinic in surf fishing and knowing the right lure to use in the right place at the right time (a Kastmaster at high tide at the very place he showed everyone when he spoke at a fishing club meeting.)  All his fish were caught in the area he circled in red at that meeting.

Nice Triple!

Bill and Libby White had a triple species kind of morning on October 30. They caught the fish between Spar and Hawksbill between 8:00 A.M. and noon. Libby's caught the 17.5 inch trout. Bill's triple was a 17.5 inch flounder, a 20 inch trout and a 22.5 inch striper. Not a bad morning!

A Big Flounder

Bruce Hice caught a very nice flounder fishing on John Trubiano's Bada Bing. The fish was 20.5 inches and weighed in at 3.5lb. It fell for a live mennhaden in Northwest Creek.

More False Albacore

Bob Armstrong, Larry Knapp and Gus Villanova had a great time on Gus's Mistress Wednesday.

They had five False Albacore in the 5 to 6 pound range, two Spanish Mackerel (19 inches and about 2 pounds) and one King Mackerel.

Citation Flounder

Bob Bruggeworth had a great morning fishing from his Spring Creek dock.

This 5lb. 13oz. 23" Citation "Doormat flounder" took a live menhadden, on a

3/0 circle hook. The fillets weighed 2lbs.

To quote Bob, "We are having one of the four fillets stuffed with fresh crab meat for dinner. Life is tough on the coast of Eastern Carolina!"

False Albacore

Gus Villanova fished alone Saturday and found a school of False Albacore. He quit after five. The biggest was 9 lbs, two others were 6 lbs and the two smallest were 5 lbs.--all on light tackle.

Menhaden = Flounder

John Trubiano (above) caught four nice flounder on the Bada Bing Thursday while fishing Northwest Creek using Menhaden.

Also Thursday, a pod of dolphins came through Upper Broad Creek  feasting on the plentiful Menhaden.  Despite this, Larry Knapp caught a 14" Striped Bass and three Flounder (13, 14 and 14 1/2 inches) from his dock.

Barracuda Head

One of the fish Bob Bruggeworth, Ed Ostrosky and Gus Vilanova caught  at the Big Rock on Gus's boat Monday was a Barracuda.  Unfortunately only the head was boated.  From the head size it was likely in the thirty inch range. They also had a 20 pound King Mackerel and two knockdowns of unknown origin. In addition to the fish, Gus also had another interesting hook up.

A Note from Gary Dubiel

Great fall fishing has arrived to North Carolina and Spec Fever can put you in the action.

We are catching redfish, seatrout, flounder and gray trout, stripers at New Bern and Spanish and false Albacore at the beach.  I have a few outstanding open dates I hope you can join me!

Current open dates October 28, November 4,12, 13, 16, 20, 21, 25-30.

At the club's Wednesday night meeting, Ron Zielinski and Jerry Manfredi announced that FHFC won the Red Drum Challenge held on August 25th out of Whittaker Point Marina in Oriental. This is the first year that our Club went up against the Eastern Carolina Fishing Club of New Bern. The winning fish was determined as the qualifying fish which had the most spots on its body.

    Doesn't look too happy?

Our angler, Aric Bruggeworth, won the plaque and the money for his 42 inch citation Red which had at least nine recorded spots. Aric was fishing with Larry Knapp and Gus Villanova on his grandfather, Bob Bruggeworth’s boat, Old Salt. Many Drum were caught during the one day of fishing and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Challenge which will hopefully turn into an annual event.

Red Drum Action Continues

Jerry Manfredi, George Maravalas, and Frank Spininger returned to their favorite Neuse River shoals near Oriental this week and found a nice Red Drum for Frank!

Forty-seven inches is a bit more than a sneeze!

Good fish Frank!

Striper Action

Dean Perkins and Dan Thallman found some nice Striped Bass at Smith Mountain Lake. They ranged from 3 1/2 to 5 pounds. Dan is thinking about a Club Excursion to Smith Mountain Lake in the spring. Encouragement may make it happen (hint, hint).

The Red Drum "Challenge"

Members of the Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club met with members of the East Carolina Fishing Club on the porch of the Whittaker Pointe Marina just before the 2:00 o'clock start for the fishing. The target was Red Drum over 40 inches but the emphasis was on conservation and minimal damage to the fish. Only barbless circle hooks were allowed and rather than risk injury to the fish by weighing them, the "challenge" was to catch a big Red with the most "spots."

Jerry Manfredi and Frank Kispet's fish was a beauty--about 45 inches--but it unfortunately had only two spots.

Did the fish break the yardstick?

Larry Knapp, Gus Vilanova, and Bob Bruggeworth watched Aric Bruggeworth bring in a 42 inch fish. It  is certainly a front-runner while final results are awaited.

A Good Sign

Wayne Smith caught a 48 inch Red Drum near Oriental while warming up for the Saturday East Carolina Fishing Club/Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club "Red Drum Challenge."

Looks like he's ready for the "challenge."

Puppy Drum at Dusk

Ruth Levin caught a feisty Puppy Drum Sunday evening from Walt Meyer's dock on Upper Broad Creek.

After an informal dinner, she and Bernie joined Walt and Karen and Larry and Betty Knapp for some post-dinner angling.

Ruth was using two inch Gulp Shrimp on a circle hook with a bobber and just as the sun was setting, she brought in her two-spotted Puppy.

The others had some small Croakers and Spots, but the only Red Drum belonged to Ruth!

The 10:30 Bite

Bob Bruggeworth, John Hoppe, and Larry Knapp joined Gus Villanova on His Mistress Tuesday. After waiting for the weather to clear, they left the dock around 9:00 and were fishing for Spanish Mackerel by 9:30. The weather continued to look "iffy" with squalls to the east. Gus explained how the Spanish bite drops off and dies around 10:30 so they were anxious to make the most of their one good hour of fishing. Everyone picked up a fish or two before the dreaded moment when the bite would die. Ten thirty came and went, but the hopeful trio fished on.  After a number of double, triple and quadruple hookups, they finished around 1:00 with 27 Spanish in the box.

Ontario Pike

John Radtke beat the local heat recently with a fishing trip to Ontario. Here's his 33 inch Pike--one of the over two hundred fish caught by John, his son, and two other anglers.  (His son had one at 37 inches.)

Broad Creek Striper

Dennis Baldwin caught a nineteen inch Striped Bass "somewhere" in Upper Broad Creek on Saturday, July 21.

Unusually Large Soft Shell Crab

The Master Crabsman, Bob Bruggeworth, caught a soft shell crab that measured eight inches, point to point. The "wing" span was considerably wider at well over a foot.

Fishing on the Bill Collector

Wayne Massetti, Bob Bruggeworth, George Hemingway,  Larry Knapp, Mary Anne Hunter, and Bob Armstrong  were out on the Bill Collector with Captain Stephen Draughon on June 25.

Early on, George landed the first fish, a five to six foot sailfish, that was released as soon as the mate touched the leader. George is in line for a North Carolina Saltwater Fishing Citation.

Unfortunately in the early morning excitement none of the photos taken showed the fish (but George did get to hold the flag upside down!)

There were a couple of multiple hookups on Mahi-Mahi--including a little sibling action when Bob Bruggeworth and his sister Mary Anne had a double.

Mary Anne also had the day's only tuna--a Blackfin "football."

Wayne Smith's 55 Pound King Salmon

Wayne Smith is back from a fishing trip with some Seattle area friends to Sitka, Alaska. They fished with Tom Buckroyd from his Alaskan Advantage lodge.  They limited daily on King Salmon, Halibut, and Ling Cod and had a couple of Yelloweye Rockfish (Red Snapper).  The salmon were mostly 20 to 30 pounds. The largest fish caught was Wayne's 55 pound King Salmon.

Wayne told us "The halibut were small but the best eating, running 15 to 30 pounds. The Ling cod had to be between 30” and 35” and we released numerous lings to 45 pounds."

There's a picture of a large Yelloweye Rockfish Wayne caught in Alaska last year on the Other Catches page.

Black Drum in the Surf

John Johnson caught an 18 ½  pound Black Drum in the surf at Atlantic Beach. The fish was 33 inches long and it took John a half hour to bring him to the sand.

Four Kings on His Mistress

Bob Bruggeworth, Gus Villanova and Larry Knapp boated four King Mackerel to 27 inches on Gus's boat, "His Mistress," on Friday.

Big Mahi-Mahi out of Teach's Lair Marina

To celebrate Jeff Wertz's wedding aboard the Capn. Clam out of Oden's Dock in Hatteras on Sunday, Club Members Bob Bruggeworth, Tate Garey, and Wayne Massetti fished with the groom, Jeff Wertz,  his Dad, Don Wertz,  and friend, Mark Laney.  They had a good catch of Mahi-Mahi and Wahoo, highlighted by Mark's 46 pound, NC Citation Bull Dolphin.
Bride Gina Wertz's family also had a very successful day! David, Rick and Jo Ann Paller fished with Gina's sons John, Kevin and Robert. They also had a large number of Mahi-Mahi as well as some Yellowfin Tuna.

Successful Overnight Trip on the Capt. Stacy

A. G. Kessinger pulled an overnighter on the Capt. Stacy out of Atlantic Beach. He had 19 and 21 pound Amberjacks as well as a 4 pound Triggerfish, a Vermillion Snapper and a "bunch" of Pogies.

Inner Harbour Action

Evelyn and Grant "Festus" Garey had success catching Sunfish early Saturday morning behind Wayne Massetti's home on Jewel Court.  They were using worms for bait and demonstrated good patience and technique.

Successful Trip on the Dancin' Outlaw

On May 2, six members of the Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club  went out to the Big Rock with Captain Thomas Wood on the 56 foot Dancin' Outlaw out of Morehead. It was a bit rough getting out into a stiff 15 to 20 knot wind from the south-west but by the end of the trip, with three Wahoo in the fish box totaling 79 pounds, everyone agreed it was well worth it !

After drawing numbers and fishing on a half-hour rotation,  Bob Riegel. Steve Dauerbach, and Bruce Young had success (front row with fish).  While the others had fishless half-hours themselves, A. G. Kessinger, Larry Jones and Larry Knapp (back row)  felt free to vocally criticize the technique of those who had fish on the line.

As you can see in the picture Steve and Bruce had two very nice fish.

Bob "Wahoo" Riegel, however, got top honors and will be receiving a 2007 NORTH CAROLINA SALTWATER FISHING TOURNAMENT Citation from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries which recognizes any Wahoo over 40 pounds. Bob's was 40 and a half.

Trifecta Catch on "His Mistress"

On April 10th, while fishing the Big Rock on Gus Villanova's boat, HIS MISTRESS, John Hoppe and Jerry Manfredi caught a trifecta: one 7 lb King Mackerel, one 27 lb Yellow Fin Tuna, and one 33 lb Wahoo.
