While attending biz school at the University of Edinburgh, I did some research and remembered finding a connection to Valleyfield through a John Preston, shown born both in Donnegal and Valleyfield, on the same date in 1699,and was the grandson of a Robert Preston and Margaret Bothwell of Valleyfield. In addition, the Earl of Elgin, currently residing at Broomhall in Dunfermline, near where Valleyfield once stood, holds interesting paintings of Valleyfield. I have visited with him a few times over the years and he is in possession of the Preston Estates inherited by his grandfather. It is rumored that Valleyfield was destroyed when metal (copper) from its roof was taken for WWI. The Prestons originally came from Craigmillar Castle in the Scottish County of Midlothian. Also, as for our family, I married Sarah Evans Colmery, from San Francisco on 11/13/82 and have three children - Hallie Evans b.5/30/84, Elizabeth Claire b.10/11/88 and Robert Sheffey IV (Robbie) on 6/7/96. Again - for me, your information was interesting and only wish my father, deceased 10/28/91, could have seen it.

Ann married Henry Pinson when Thomas was a young child and they moved to Pike Co KY, Thomas, her only child, married Henry's niece, Ann Pinson in 1823 and they moved to what is now Wayne Co WV. They had 16 children, six sons including my GGgrandfather, Cpl Goodwin Preston, who fought for the 16th VA Inf and 8th VA Cav. I have lots more info on Thomas and his children. The mystery has been Who HIS FATHER was and who Ann's Parents were. It has been said that Thomas was born out of wedlock. It has also been said that he is from Col William Preston's line...I'd like to figure this out :-> Being from Charleston you have an idea of how many PRESTON's there are in this area...it is pretty clear that we are not in MOSES' or COBY's or GILBERT's lines...
