History Of Riverside United Methodist ChurchRiverside Methodist Church 1940
Riverside United
Methodist Church began as a community Sunday School for the children of
the Riverside community of New Bern. It was organized by concerned
and dedicated members of Centenary Methodist Church. The Sunday
School soon grew into a congregation that was officially chartered as
Riverside Methodist Church in November 1913. The church met for a
while in an old cannery building. Plans were drawn up to erect a new
building on the corner of Pasteur Street and Avenue A. Those plans
became a reality when services were held in the newly built sanctuary in
August 1920.
Plans for
additional space began to take shape in 1947. In November 1954, the
Richard E. Stapleford Memorial Annex was completed. The addition was
named in memory of the only member of Riverside Church to give his life in
World War II.
