An egoless, uncontrived penetration beyond words and the spontaneous display of spirit are traditional hallmarks of Ch'an. Nonetheless, egoless, uncontrived transphenomenal activity is undetectable by ordinary means, and spontaneous action may deceive both actor and witness. Note well that by attending to the mystical footsteps of the ancient existential dragon both masterful student and studious master perform egoless uncontrived action or egoless uncontrived nonaction in every instance, while the mischievous egoist who pretends to be spontaneous merely indulges in karmic whimsy. |
