Many new Baofeng UV-5R's are limited to only transmit on ham radio frequencies 144-148 MHz, 222-225 MHz, 420-450 MHz - ONLY. Due to FCC action, new devices seem to be locked to these transmit frequencies. This basically means that, from the factory, they cannot be used for FRS or GMRS. There is a simple fix to make them usable for FRS and GMRS as well as the UHF / VHF ham radio channels..

With the radio off - press the "PTT" button, "Monitor" button, and the "VFO" button simultaneously (all at the same time) while turning the radio "on"
The word "FACTORY" will appear on the screen. You can now use the FRS and GMRS channels
