Newsletter - October 2000

Upcoming Services: Dr. Frank Schulman will preach both the 2nd and 4th Sundays in October.

Sunday, October 8th:
Dr. Schulman's sermon topic will be "Do Miracles Happen?" Dr. Schulman says that "We hear about miracle cures ranging from cancer and headaches to alcoholism, along with other kinds of miracles. But are they really miracles? What do we make of them? Can faith change the ordinary course of nature? Should we pray for divine intervention when things go wrong?"

Sunday, October 22nd:
Dr. Schulman will talk on "Honesty and Lying." He says, "Honesty is such an obvious trait that it is remarkable that anyone should question it. It’s a primary virtue. Yes, as the saying has it, the Devil is in the details. How strict should we be? What about ‘the permissible lie’? What about diplomacy, or just white lies meant to save someone’s feelings?"

Past Services:

Sept. 10, Loyalty Sunday:
We had at least 40 in attendance to hear Dr. Schulman's sermon on "Biblical Religion." In his comments after the sermon, Dr. Schulman told us a little about his visits to Unitarian congregations in Transylvania. He had just returned from Transylvania, where he represented the UUA at the World Gathering of Unitarians, and from Oxford, where he delivered the Presidential Address at a conference on James Martineau and lectured on Martineau’s theory of the ministry.

Stuart Williamson had a fine article in the Item on the Saturday before this service. The Item had lost the picture that they had taken, so they substituted a snapshot taken by Dorothy Huskey at the May business meeting at the Krocks' house and also printed a snapshot taken of Dr. Schulman in his robe at a service one spring at the Siglers' home.

Pam Maine shared her news of the birth of her first grandchild.

Three generations of Lemmons were present. David and Marjolein's guests were David's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lemmon from Houston. Ray Lemmon, a charter member of the Emerson Unitarian Church in Houston, was a guest speaker in November of 1995.

Two other former guest speakers were also present. Wendell Baker, who earlier brought us a message on desegregation in Huntsville, now heads up the Forum on Racial Unity. John Rodgers from Conroe, who once spoke to us on "Bumperfish," is a frequent speaker at the All Souls Fellowship in The Woodlands.

Other guests from The Woodlands were Greg, Sandy, and Zoe Tramel. Roberta Krock brought her mother, Lois Slack, from Marion, Ohio.

Visiting from Huntsville were also Pat and Crystal Shevlin.

Sept.24:
Paul Culp spoke on "The History of Organized Religion in Walker County." If you missed this presentation, you missed hearing about some interesting facts; for example, two colleges existed in Huntsville before a church building was constructed.

Eighteen were present for this service, and a dozen continued on to Jose's Mexican Restaurant afterward. Visitors were V.J. Hoff of Crockett and Kathleen Donovan of Huntsville.

Other news:
We welcome Irl and JoAnn Harper as official members. They have been attending and participating in our fellowship for some time. They signed our membership book on September 10.

Anne and Kelley Sigler have returned from their travels in South America. Anne writes: "We had a fabulous trip! Had many great adventures; saw strange animals up close; were in Peru when the Pres. resigned and there were demonstrations all around; found fine people everywhere. We traveled with a group of 11 and never heard a cuss-word or a disgruntled remark for the entire 3 weeks."

Invitations:
The congregation of Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church invites you to join in celebrating the installation of Barbara Dunbar as their Program Minister, on Sunday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. at the church on West Parkway in Carrollton, Texas.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi requests the honor of your presence at the Service of Ordination and Installation for Dr. David Neal Owen, on Sunday, October 8, at 7:00 p.m., 3125 Horne Road.

A new email list has been implemented for the Unitarian Universalist GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered) and friends and family community. Its name is Interweave Greater Houston (IW-Ghou). The purpose is to allow a church member to post a message to IW-Ghou and have that message sent to all members of the list at the same time. In that way all members can be informed of upcoming events and also be made aware of the happenings of each individual church. This is a list for UU's and all information about members is private. To join the list, send an email to sbc@hal-pc.org and in the body of the email give your name, telephone number, the church you attend and your email address. Stuart Chatkin of First UU is the list moderator.

Southwest UU Fall Leadership Conference: "Livin' La Vida UU"
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Tony Larson, infamous for his "UU Revivals." The conference is at First Unitarian Church, Dallas, Nov. 10-12. The weekend promises to be full of inspirational messages, workshops on all aspects of the church, fellowship and fun.
