Newsletter - January 2001

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Newsletter Editors wish all of you a New Year filled with joy!

January 10th: This will be the first of our luncheons for the Huntsville UU Women! Please make plans to attend. This date is different from the one announced in the November newsletter--so be careful. Wednesday, January 10th is the correct date. We’ll meet at noon at the Putter Parlour at the Elkins Lake Clubhouse. Augusta Drive, the first street into Elkins Lake, dead-ends at the Clubhouse. Park in the parking lot and come up the ramp on the right side of the Pro Shop. Turn left at the top of the ramp and go until you see the Putter Parlour (small hamburger-type restaurant) on your right. Will have some signs with directions as you enter the parking lot.

Please be thinking of what kind of format you’d like for this group to follow, what topics you’d like to discuss, what direction you’d like for this UU Women’s lunch group to take. Perhaps you’d just like to meet for lunch and have no plan–that would be o.k. too. It’s our group-so we can do what we want!

Sunday, January 14th: Dr. Schulman’s sermon will be entitled, "What Worship does for Us." He writes that "Worship is as old as our species. In countries where architecture was unknown people chose solemn places for worship. Worship helped people deal with their fears, wants, hopes, gratitude, and praises to unseen powers. Have we outgrown these primitive needs? Is worship just a habit? What motives lie behind our church attendance? "

Sunday, January 24th: Dr. Deborah Phelps is an award-winning professor of poetry at SHSU. She will read some of her poetry for us.

Other News:

We had a lot of fun at our Christmas Party! Wish you all could have been there. We’ll do it earlier next year and hope to have more members with us. Glenn and Kathy Payne did a clever take-off on the "12 Days of Christmas" that was enjoyed by the children as well as adults!

The Fellowship had a nice letter from Don Ko. He is eager to finish his work in St. Louis and return to "sunny" Texas.

Don’t Forget: The Blood Drive happens the 2nd Saturday of each month in the West Hill Mall. The blood supply is seriously depleted and your pint will be much appreciated.
