Sunday, April 8, 10:30 a.m., Laura
Chapel at HMH
Dr. Frank Schulmans sermon on April 8 will be
EASTER SUNDAY: 29 A.D. : WHAT HAPPENED? Dr. Schulman
says, The central fact of Christianity, if we may
so put it, is the resurrection. No other occurrence is as
important to Christian history. What really happened?
Unitarians usually talk on Easter about flowers and
spring. But can we reconstruct what really happened? Did
Christ rise from the dead? And if not, what can explain
the stories? Lets give it a try. Coffee and cookies will be served in the
entryway after the service.
Sunday, April 22, 10:30 a.m., Laura
Chapel at HMH
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Diane Neudorf, Assistant
Professor of Biology at SHSU, who will talk to us about
Texas birds. This will be your opportunity to find out
what that bird is that you see out your window and how to
attract more birds to your yard. Audubon members tell us
that this speaker is one you are sure to enjoy.
We'll eat at an area restaurant after
the service.
New Look at Laura Chapel
The painting and carpeting in the chapel is now complete.
Teal carpeting and cranberry cushions now bring out the
bold colors in the windows. The freshly painted ceiling
is light and clean, the polished wood gleams, and even
the sculptured cross shines with new brilliance. We are
indeed grateful for such a lovely place to worship.
UU Women
Wed, Arpil 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The Womens Sharing Circle will meet from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. at the home of Roberta Krock, 3329 Pine Grove
Drive in Pine Shadows Estates off FM 1374.
The topic of discussion for this
meeting will be women significant in our lives. The UU
guest speaker on March 25, Dr. Kandi Tayebi, gave details
about the life of Charlotte Smith, a British writer and
poet in the Romantic Period. Even with an abusive husband
who squandered Charlottes earnings from her
writings, she was able to raise 12 children while writing
10 novels, a play, several volumes of poetry, and six
childrens educational books. Thinking about
Charlotte Smith may remind us of other women who have
overcome tremendous odds, or women who have just made
quiet contributions that have enriched our lives. We will
discuss our ideas at the April 4th meeting.
We regret that Elizabeth Stone will
soon be leaving Huntsville for a job in Augusta, Maine,
but we wish her well as she returns to her home area.
What is the most convenient meeting
time? What topics would you like to discuss at future
meetings? We will decide these things on April 4.
Wed, April 11, 12 noon
Pleasant discussion over lunch is a nice break in the
middle of the week. Well lunch again at 12 noon at
the Putter Parlour in Elkins Lake.
New Members Welcomed
Following the sermon on March 15, Dr. Schulman presided
over an old ceremony called The Right Hand of Fellowship
to formally welcome new members. This was the first time
for this service to be used by our Fellowship, and
included were those who had signed the membership book in
the last 18 months: Kathleen Donovan, Anne and Paul
Isham, Dixon Lichtenauer,Melissa Morphew, Glenn and Kathy
Payne, and Anita and Scott Plummer. Irl and JoAnn Harper
were unable to attend but were in our thoughts. Ken
Krock, president of the Fellowship, greeted the honorees
with a handshake on behalf of the congregation, and each
new member was given a flower. We rejoice in welcoming
this fine group of members.
Easter Sunday Brunch
In place of our annual brunch at Elkins Lake, this year
we will gather at 9:30 to have brunch together at the
Golden Corral restaurant on 11th Street. Look for a table
reserved for the UUs.
Nominating Committee
This years nominating committee will be chaired by
Stuart Williamson. Helping him to select a slate of
officers to be elected at the May business meeting are
Dorothy Huskey, Paul Isham, and Dixon Lichtenauer.
Annual Business Meeting
Anne and Kelly Sigler have offered their home for the
annual business meeting, tentatively scheduled for May
19. A pot luck will follow the meeting. The time will be
announced later.
Beware of Scam
Our Fellowship received a message from the SW District
UUA office warning of a scam similar to one that was
reported several months ago. This time an Atlanta UU had
had his name being used by someone asking for money from
other UUs. What happens is that someone calls a UU and
says he's _______, a Unitarian, and he was mugged and
robbed while traveling far from home (or had some other
bad thing happen that leaves him without money, credit
cards, or ID). Now he needs money to get home and/or pay
his medical bills. He's even been known to call back to
thank the donor for an initial cash gift and,
incidentally, to ask for more. He uses the names of
actual UUs as a means of establishing credibility and he
sometimes claims to have attended conferences or
meetings. The Atlanta UU offers this advice:
"Whenever anyone gets a call from someone needing
immediate financial assistance, you should offer to call
an airline and buy them a non-refundable ticket to get
them where they are going. They will not accept and you
know you have a scam. Likewise, if they say they need
money for a medical emergency, etc., tell them that you
will call a hospital or clinic and arrange payment for
their treatment, etc. If it is a scam, they will refuse
and again push for cash."
