Huntsville UU Services

Frank and Alice Schulman will be in Alaska for 6 weeks beginning September 1. Dr. Schulman will be the
minister at the Fairbanks, Alaska, Fellowship during this time. We wish them well. We will meet on our regular dates in
September and have scheduled two outstanding speakers from the Houston area to be our presenters.
This letter includes our August dates as well as a description of the topics to be presented in September.

Sunday, August 10, 10:30 AM, Laura Chapel at HMH:

Dr. Schulman's sermon topic will be "The Bible, and a Few Words About the
Author." The Bible has been considered so holy--the literal word of God--that people were reluctant to investigate
it. Others ignored it. Let's look at how the Bible really got written, who wrote it and why, and what it means for us.
There are exciting stories about it; indeed, one of the most curious stories I know, about how it came to be considered
sacred. It began back in 621 B.C.

Ancient Reading: Deuteronomy 6: 1-9

Modern Reading: from "Unitarian Christianity" by William Ellery Channing

Sun. Sept 14: Ross Henry, Humanist minister and President of the Isaac Asimov Chapter
of the Humanities of Montgomery County, will present "The Humanist Perspective on Religion."

Sun. Sept 28: Karen McGee, psychotherapist in private and trainer at the Jung Center
in Houston will present "The Vision of Carl Jung."

 Looking Ahead:

On Sunday, October 26, exactly 450 years after Servetus was sentenced to his
death for heresy, Dr. Schulman will preach on "Servetus' Real Discovery."

Ancient Reading: Luke 6: 27-38

Modern Reading: The Sentencing of Servetus, by the Syndics
[Judges] of Geneva, October 26, 1553.

 Huntsville UU Women

Wed. Aug 6: The Women's Sharing Circle will meet at 1 p.m. at the home of Roberta Krock. The
address is 3329 Pine Grove Drive in the Pine Grove subdivision off 1374. Beth Williamson and Gail Phillips will
present an overview of the curriculum, Cakes for the Queen of Heaven, and Gail will review the book,
Changing of the Gods by Naomi Goldenberg. This is a fascinating explanation about how the rise of
feminism has affected the image of God in the Judeo-Christian culture.

     	Wednesday, August 13:

The UU Women will join the Red Hat Society for lunch at 1:00 P.M. at the Rodeo Mexican
	Restaurant.

UU Book Club

Sunday, August 24:

Anne and Kelley Sigler will host the August meeting at 6:30 p.m. and will lead the discussion of The Lexus and the Olive Tree:
Understanding Globalization by Thomas L. Friedman. The address is 1321 Greenbriar Drive in Elkins Lake.
In October, we will be discussing How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role
from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe by Thomas Cahill.

IRL HARPER SCHOLARSHIP: JoAnn Harper thanks the Unitarian congregation for continuing the
contribution to the Irl Harper scholarship at the Joe Davis School of Nursing at Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
This year Angela Coker, a mature woman with a child in high school and one in college, received the scholarship.
Angela's ambition is to be a hospice nurse. Jo Ann reports that Irl appreciated the hospice nurses who cared for him
and she feels that Angela Coker is an appropriate recipient of the funds. JoAnn and her family also continue to
contribute to the scholarship that now has a fund of $4800. JoAnn and her family hope the funds will eventually
	become self-sustaining.
