Newsletter - March 2006

I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome.
--Booker T. Washington in Up From Slavery

Huntsville UU Services
Services are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.

Sun. March 12: Our guest speaker will be deForest Ralph, a long-time Unitarian who has been active at the Emerson Unitarian Church in Houston for many years. He and his wife serve as the Co-chairs for Emerson's Partner Church Committee, working with a church in Transylvania. Although semi-retired, he is a Chemical Engineering graduate of Rice University whose professional career has been in the energy industry.

In his talk "Giants Upon Whose Shoulders We Stand," Mr. Ralph will look at the lives, words, and deeds of four men who are of great importance to the development of the basic tenets of Unitarianism. They are Jesus of Nazareth, John Huss, Martin Luther, and Frances David.

Sun. March 26: Our guest speaker will be Gwendolyn Thompson from the Bay Area UU Church in Houston. In her talk "Waiting Develops Faith," Ms Thompson will explore how waiting is an opportunity to develop self and a greater sense of faith.

Huntsville UU Women
Wed. March 1: The Women’s Sharing Circle will meet at 10:30 at the home of Brenda Barr, in Elkins Lake to continue its study of What the Bleep Do We Know? Anne True will lead the discussion on "Quantum Realty." Anne has a gift for making difficult concepts understandable, and this is an opportunity to ask the questions which puzzle you about the nature of reality. Afterwards the group will lunch together at Five Loaves Deli.

The free study guide can be downloaded on the internet from http://www.whatthebleep.com/guide/

Tues. March 7: The UU Women will join the Red Hat Society for lunch at 11:30 at Martha's Bloomers in Navasota.

Meet Our Newest Member
Simone Woodall moved from Spring, Texas, to Huntsville because she was retiring and looking for lower taxes. When she saw Elkins Lake, she decided it should be her home. She has been a Unitarian at heart for a long time (She and her husband were married in Houston by Dr. Schulman many years ago.) but was not affiliated with a church until she moved here.

Simone describes herself as a high-energy person who has tried a lot of different things. Besides raising two children, she and her husband owned a ranch and raised cattle and hay for l2 years. An RN with a specialty in geriatric nursing, she has worked in both hospital and nursing home settings. Simone has been widowed for three years, and her present interests are her three grandchildren (of course), travel, and reading.
