Newsletter - April 2006

"Easter is not a time for groping through dusty, musty tomes or tombs to disprove spontaneous generation or even to prove life eternal. It is a day to fan the ashes of dead hope, a day to banish doubts and seek the slopes where the sun is rising, to revel in the faith which transports us out of ourselves and the dead past into the vast and inviting unknown." --Lewiston

Huntsville UU Services
Services are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.

Sun. April 9: Our guest speaker will be the Reverend Leonora Montgomery, Minister Emeritus of the Bay Area Unitarian-Universalist Church in Houston, who will speak on "Knowing What to Do with Your Life "

Some youth finish high school and don't want to go on to college. Some college seniors stall in indecision--What next? Some people halt in mid-life and give up one career for another. Some, facing the end of life, wonder: Did my life count? Can religion help?

Immediately following this service there will be a going away party for Scott and Anita Plummer and Sylvia DeVoss at Carla and Tom McAdams' house at 86 Dahlia Rd in the Timberwilde subdivision. This will be a potluck, so everyone bring your favorite dish.

Sun. April 23: Our guest speaker will be the Reverend Tom Capo, Minister of the Spindletop Unitarian Church in Beaumont, Texas. The title of his sermon is "Darwin and/or Intelligent Design "

You can't miss the many school board and state court battles over whether Intelligent Design is just a refurbished form of Creationism. We need to keep religion out of the classroom and in the church where it belongs. In our churches and fellowships, do we affirm the wonder, perhaps even the reflection of the divine, in creation?

Huntsville UU Women
Wed. April 5: Due to everyone's busy schedule this month, the Women's Sharing Circle will not be presenting a program. However, we would like for everyone to meet for lunch at 12:00 at Cloud 9 Café.

Annual Meeting
This year's annual meeting will be at 10:30 on Saturday, May 20, at the home of Rick Norman and Anne True at 1879 Greenbriar Dr. in the Elkins Lake subdivision. We encourage everyone to attend as we have many issues to discuss. There will be a potluck lunch after the meeting.

Meet Our Newest Member
Our newest member is Mardi Sale. Though Mardi grew up in Harris County, she and her husband Danny moved here from Mobile, Alabama, last fall. Mardi is an assistant professor of accounting at SHSU. In her free time she gardens and remodels her new home. She has two children, a daughter and a son, and four lovely grandchildren.

Goodbye to Our Friends
Scott and Anita Plummer and Sylvia DeVoss will soon be leaving us to move to Utah, a portion of the country that they have always loved.

Scott has been very active in our church and has been a past president. Scott grew up in rural Utah and is returning there to be nearer to his family, especially his 90-year old mother who has had a spell of ill health. Scott is a graduate of Utah State University (B.A.), Rice University (Ph.D. in French) and the University of Houston (M.S.W.). He has worked in many different settings as a teacher, social worker, and, since moving to Huntsville, as an independent business person. Scott states that he will miss all the members of the Unitarian Fellowship and that his association with us will be some of the precious memories that he brings with him from Texas.

Anita was born and raised in Michigan, she moved to California after receiving a Masters in Social Work. She married Scott when she was a doctoral student at Rice and continued her professional career in Houston and Huntsville. Scott and Anita are currently serving as co-vice-presidents and program chairs, and we appreciate the hard work that they have done.

Sylvia DeVoss was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada. She graduated from the University of Redlands in California and lived on a ranch in Oregon, where she raised three wonderful children. She was a Corporate Manager of Training at Foley's Department store before moving to Huntsville. After moving to Huntsville she sold nutritional supplements and worked for several years for H & R Block Co. preparing income tax returns. Sylvia is a talented pianist and has been the fellowships keyboardist for many years. We will miss the beauty that she brings to our services.
