"The spirit of evil is the negation of the life force by fear. It is the lethargy that keeps us from getting out of bed and from participating in life."
   --from James Hollis,
Jungian analyst and Director of the Jung Center in Houston

 Huntsville UU Services
Summer services are held on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
In September, services will return to the regular schedule of meeting on
the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.
Sun. July 9: Rev. Tom Capo from Spindletop UU will be our speaker.
He lives in Clear Lake near JSC NASA with his wife and two teenage sons. He is also a
practicing psychotherapist and is on the SWUUC Conflict Assessment Team.
His topic is "Letting Go of the Ego." What does it mean to 'let go of the ego'? The word "self" is often used as
a synonym for ego. Western psychology emphasizes the value of a clear sense
of self resulting in a feeling of autonomy and a healthy dose of self-esteem.
But difficulty can arise spiritually when we invest the ego, or self, with
too much importance, for we may become self-centered or egocentric. Rev. Capo
will share a Buddhist perspective on this problem.

    Huntsville UU Women

Wed. July 5: The Women’s Sharing Circle will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Spring
Lake home of Mardi Sale to continue their discussion of Simple Steps: Getting Control of
Your Life. Beth Williamson will be the facilitator.
Discussion Group on "What is Healthy Spirituality?"
Sun. July 16: "Every so often something so good comes along that it ought to be shared." That is the way
the Phillips feel about a workshop which they attended in
Houston last winter on the topic "What Is Healthy Spirituality?" It was so
good they even bought the tapes and now invite you to come and listen and
  then discuss what you hear.
Ralph Phillips will lead the discussion from 3-5 p.m. at the Phillips’ house. RSVP (936) 438-8569. Thanks!
Session 1: The Heresy of American Religion
J. Pittman McGehee, former dean of Christ Church Cathedral,
Jungian analyst, and the director of the Institute for the
Advancement of Psychology and Spirituality, compares and
contrasts American religion with a 21st century theology and a
search for the essence of a healthy and mature spirituality.
Session 2: Keeping the Mystery the Mystery
Discussion date will be determined at Session 1.
James Hollis, Jungian analyst and executive director of the Jung
Center in Houston, is also author of 11 books, including Finding
Meaning in the Second Half of Life. He discusses the relationship
between consciousness, spiritual practice, and the autonomy of mystery.

 Annual UU Fellowship Picnic--September 30
Please note time and location change. Bring your favorite dish and join us for an old-fashioned picnic dinner at 5 p.m.
on Saturday evening, September 30. Tableware and drinks will be furnished by your hosts, Ralph and Gail Phillips, but card
tables and lawn chairs will be appreciated. "The weather should be cooler by then," predicts Ralph, "and we should be able
to sit on the deck and enjoy watching the sun set over the lake." Please join us.
From Our Hospitality Chair: Thanks for the Cookies!
Good fellowship is the best part of a UU gathering, and cookies always sweeten the experience, both literally and
figuratively. Thanks to Beth and Stuart Williamson for cookies in July and to Ann True and Rick Norman for the August
goodies.
Watch for "Cloudy Productions" on Tuesday Evenings
Something new this summer that you might want to try is the Tuesday evening series of programs which
are being presented at Cloud Nine, 1212 University Avenue, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. They cover a variety of
timely topics and are free and open to the public. Donąt miss Dr. Ralph Pease’s discussion of what makes
a good movie, which is scheduled for June 27, or the July 11 program on cloning and stem cell research, to
be presented by Dr. Anne Gaillard, professor of biological sciences at SHSU. There will be no discussion
on the July 4 holiday. Watch for announcements about future programs. Thanks to Walter Boyd, who has
masterminded this series.
Red Hat Society Continues to Provide Tasty Monthly Outings
Another community resource available this summer for the "mature woman" is the Huntsville Red Hat Society, which is
celebrating its fifth birthday at 11:00 a.m. on July 12 at El Chico, the restaurant where their first luncheon was held.
The "Founding Mother" of the group, JoAnn Harper (also a past member of our UU Fellowship) has been invited, so ladies,
put on your red hats and come.

  Recommended Summer Reading
Ann Stpls reminds us that hot summer evenings are a wonderful time to stay in the air-conditioned house and read.
Her recent recommendations are A Short History of Myth by Karen Armstrong and Do You Speak
American? by Robert MacNeil and William Cran.
Unlike Karen Armstrong's other books which you may be familiar with (A History
of God, The Battle for God), this one really is short, being a mere 176 pages, but Ann found it to be extremely helpful,
especially the first and last chapters, in explaining our present-day revival of interest in mythology. Does this sound like a book
for a discussion group?
Is American English in decline? Are regional dialects dying out? Is there a difference
between men and women in how they adapt to linguistic variations?
These questions and more about our language are addressed in Do You Speak
American? With insight and wit, authors MacNeil and Cran provocatively show how the standard for American
English (if a standard exists) is changing quickly and dramatically.
Thanks, Ann, for sharing with us.
