"Bittersweet October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter." --Carol Bishop Hipps

Huntsville UU Services
Services are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.

New Time for Coffee: Please come at 10:00 for coffee and conversation before the service. Coffee will not be served after the service. Post-service conversation will continue over lunch.

Sun. October 14: Our guest speaker, Tom Laurent, is one of the founding members of the National Libertarian Party. He will speak on Morals and Politics. Mr. Laurent received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from San Diego State. Though now retired, he has worked as a restaurant owner, a radio announcer and in real estate. Currently he is the president of the local Kiwanis club.

Sun. October 28: Rev. Tom Capo's sermon is entitled “The Many Misunderstandings of Islam.” Rev. Capo writes, "Not long ago I was talking to a UU minister, and he said that Islam was a violent religion. I couldn't believe I was hearing this, yet I didn't have all the evidence to argue this point with him. So I started looking into the Koran and into the Islamic faith, so I could respond to these kinds of misunderstandings and prejudices in the future."

Fall Picnic
We will be having our annual fall potluck picnic at Anne and Kelley Sigler's home (1321 Greenbriar Dr. in the Elkins Lake subdivision) after church on October 14th. We encourage everyone to come and bring a favorite dish. During the picnic we will also be holding a church business meeting. We have several topics to discuss and vote on. Included in these topics are the design of a permanent church structure, the adoption of the proposed mission statement, and the establishment of a religious education program.

Proposed Mission Statement
Firmly grounded in our Unitarian Universalist principles, we join together on the path of spiritual and intellectual growth to promote knowledge and caring for one another and celebrate community, acceptance, and tolerance for a more equitable world.

Our Seven Principles
We, the congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association covenant to affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person.

  • Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.

  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.

  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.

  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

  • Respect for the independent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Information From the Building Committee Meeting
As you know, we have been considering constructing a permanent home for our church. Before our Oct. 14th picnic, the building committee will be sending all members information about the costs of a 3000 sq. ft. building, and also information about the amount of money that has been pledged to help finance it. Please look over this information carefully. Furthermore, we need everyone to consider what is necessary and important in a church building. We will want to vote on the size and attributes of the proposed construction. With this information in hand, we can then go on to get detailed plans and accurate costs. The more input we have from everyone, the better decisions we can make. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelley Sigler.

    Religious Education Program
For our church to grow, it is necessary to attract young families. To that end, we should be considering ways to make our church more child-friendly. Instituting a religious education program would be an important first step. Keeping the children involved and feeling that they are part of the congregation is necessary, not only for having families visit our church, but in insuring that they keep returning.

    Women's Sharing Circle
The Women's Sharing Circle will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, October 18th, at Gail Phillip's House. We will have an open program about "How We spent our Summer Vacations." Afterwards we will all go to lunch together.

    Intention-To-Give Cards
This year we have asked the members of our fellowship to fill out Intention-to-Give cards. We decided to do this to get information about future contributions to the church. This information will allow our congregation to determine how best to budget our resources to help our church operate and grow. To all of you who have sent in your pledges, we thank you so much. We ask the others to please fill out your cards and give them to either Anne or Kelley Sigler as soon as possible.

    Church History
Joan Stringer is compiling an album of church history. If you have old photos and documents from church functions, please see that she gets them when she returns in September from her travels.

    Kathleen Donovan's Birthday
Kathleen Donovan's daughter Rachel will be hosting a birthday celebration for her mother in Lenexa, Kansas, on Saturday, Oct. 6th. Her actual birthday was September 24th.
