Huntsville UU Services
Services are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.

Please come at 10:00 for coffee and conversation before the service. Coffee will not be served after the service. Post-service conversation will continue over lunch.

Sun. January 13: Our guest speaker will be Laura Thresher Johnston of Coldspring, Texas. Her talk will be entitled "The Apostle Mark and his Introduction of the Christian Religion to the World."

On Dec. 17, 2005 Laura, at age 90, became the oldest SHSU student to receive a degree. She earned a Master of Arts in history; four years previously, she had earned a bachelors degree at SHSU in Spanish. Of herself she writes "I was born in Boston, Mass, September 3, 1915. My father died when I was less than two years old. Mother placed me in an Orphan's Home. My father's sister, who had to bring my father up when his mother died, took me home and brought me up. She was 50 at the time and I was referred to as "Hell on Wheels" -–I have no idea what that means.

I graduated from Fall River High School in 1933 in June and entered Nurses Training in the New England Hospital for Women and children in Roxbury, Mass (it is no longer in existence). I married in 1935 to A William Johnston, but the marriage ended after about 15 years. I had three daughters, Jean, Jeanette and Jannelle. My oldest daughter just celebrated her 70th birthday and thought that was just fine. After my daughters were grown, I started traveling around the country - and it is a beautiful place. Beauty abounds!!! Decided I would like to learn Spanish when I was 75 at SHSU and then became interested in History: BA Spanish 2001; MA History 2005. So much fun!"

Sun. January 27: Rev. Capo's service is entitled Spiritual Empowerment. He writes, "Power is a word that is emotionally charged. I have heard UU youth groups talk about youth empowerment. I have been reading lately books on how to empower yourself in the work place. Some people see power as a way of getting their needs met; while others define empowerment as how assertive or aggressive one is in relationships. Is there another way to view empowerment? Is there some spiritual sense of empowerment?"

Huntsville UU Women
The Women's Sharing Circle will meet Thursday, January 17th, at 10:30 at the home of Carla McAdams. The topic this month will be A Look at Our Neighbor: Mexico.

This will be a report on the trip which some of our UU women made to Mexico last August, to be followed by an update by Beth Williamson on US immigration issues and by a general discussion on how we can be good neighbors with Mexico.

Welcome to Our Newest Member
We welcome our newest member, James Moore. James was born and raised in Texas - mainly in Houston, but some in Austin. He currently lives in Onalaska but plans to move to Huntsville within a year. For the last year, he has been a professional personal tutor for SHSU students in a variety of subjects. He has also worked with Richard Lane through the library's literacy program as a tutor and trainer, and furthermore he hopes to be working as an ESL tutor at the English Language Institute of SHSU starting in January.

James writes that the "UU Fellowship of Huntsville is the only church I have ever attended that actually reflects my personal beliefs and I've been to many churches of many denominations. It's perfect timing since the UU wishes to grow and possibly build a church. I can bring in a great number of students who have never heard of UU and could gain greatly from it. Also, I would like to start some sort of Youth Ministry/Sunday School of some sort." We are delighted that James has decided to join our Fellowship, and we are looking forward to his contribution to our Community.

The Fellowship Votes to Accept the Land on East Mosley Lane
During a business meeting on December 9, 2007, the members of our Fellowship voted to accept Lot Seven (7) of the Thoreau Woods Subdivision located on East Mosley Lane in Huntsville Texas, with the understanding that it will be used to build a new church building for our Fellowship. Since then, the fellowship's President, Mardi Sale, has signed the gift deed and it has been filed for recording.

Our Deepest Sympathies
We extend our condolences to our fellowship's President, Mardi Sale, and her husband Danny, upon the recent death of Danny's father, R.S. Sale. R. S. Sale was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, on October 29, 1917. He spent his childhood in Louisiana and attended LSU before enlisting in the Navy during WWII. He spent his career as an airline mechanic and inspector for several carriers and retired from Continental Airlines in 1986. He was a lifelong Democrat, a founding member of the Galveston Bay Foundation and an avid supporter of the Nature Conservancy. He passed away on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Our thoughts will be with both Mardi and Danny in the coming year. The family asks that any donations be made to the Huntsville Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship's building fund.

Recommended Books
Jewish Holidays All Year Round by Ilene Cooper. Text 80 pages. Although it is a children's book, it is very interesting to read and has many fine art illustrations from museums and other venues. It also includes simple recipes and craft activities for children. I thought that it gave me a much better understanding of the Jewish religion through acquiring information about their celebrations and traditions.
