Newsletter - March 2008

"Easter is not a time for groping through dusty, musty tomes or tombs to disprove spontaneous generation or even to prove life eternal.  It is a day to fan the ashes of dead hope, a day to banish doubts and seek the slopes where the sun is rising, to revel in the faith which transports us out of ourselves and the dead past into the vast and inviting unknown."
--Author unknown, as quoted in the Lewiston Tribune

Huntsville UU Services
Services are usually held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Laura Chapel of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. For this March only, we will meet on the 5th Sunday instead of the 4th. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, call 295-3170.

Please come at 10:00 for coffee and conversation before the service. Coffee will not be served after the service. Post-service conversation will continue over lunch.

Sun. March 9: Our speaker will be Glenn Sanford. The title of his talk will be "Science and Religion in the Classroom: The Forty Years Since Epperson."

"In 1968, the U.S. Supreme Court opened U.S. classrooms to evolutionary theory. During the intervening 40 years, numerous efforts have been made to supplant (or augment) evolutionary theory with creationist or intelligent design alternatives. With issues ranging from academic freedom to separation of church and state or freedom of speech to educational quality, this talk will endeavor to introduce a sampling of the case law that has developed in this area."

Dr. Sanford has a B.A. in philosophy from The College of Wooster and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Biology from Duke University. He has been at SHSU for ten years where he is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy. He is the Co-Chair of the National Collegiate Honors Council's Science and Mathematics Committee, and in 2005, he co-authored A Historical Dictionary of the Darwin Controversy with Ken Hendrickson, Ph.D.

Sun. March 30: Rev. Capo's sermon is entitled "What Will I Commit To."

What do Unitarian Universalists commit to for their spiritual growth? Muslims commit to a once in a lifetime Haj; Catholics commit to Confessions and Communions; some Buddhists commit to spending part of their life as a monk or nun. What do Unitarian Universalists commit to for their spiritual growth? What are you willing to commit to for your spiritual growth?

Note that instead of the fourth Sunday of March, Reverend Capo will be preaching on the fifth Sunday of March

Dorothy Huskey's Birthday
On March 16th, a member of our congregation, Dorothy Huskey, will turn 90 years old. Dorothy is currently residing with her nephew in Tennessee. We send her our wishes for a joyous celebration. For those who would like to send cards, her address is 575 Brookshire Way, Knoxville TN 37923-5844. We, as a congregation, are also going to give her a digital frame, and we ask all members to contribute pictures of themselves. Pictures of themselves with Dorothy are especially welcome. We would like to have at minimum one picture of each member and friend, and we encourage people to send multiple pictures. Jpeg's can be sent to ae_true@yahoo.com. Hard copies are also accepted and can be sent to Anne True, 130 Elkins Lake, Huntsville, TX 77340. I would appreciate all photos by March 10th.

A Note from Your Editor, Anne True
My job as the Newsletter Editor is to take various bits of information and put them together in a central location so that all members of the congregation know what will be happening in the next month or two. This brings up several points. First, I am not in charge of anything; I do not set policy, recruit speakers, or determine when meetings will occur. My job is to spread information (think of me as a rumor-monger).

Second, because I am not omniscient, people must tell me formally what will be occurring over the next couple of months. I request that this information be in writing, because my memory is not what it used to be. I would like everybody to submit all newsletter information by the twentieth of the preceding month (e.g. March 20th will be the deadline for the April newsletter). This will give me enough time to edit and mail out the Newsletter by the first of the month. If you would like your event to be a recurring notice in the newsletter, please tell me.

Last, I would like to include more personal celebrations in the newsletter. Please let me know if anything really wonderful has happened in your family recently. My email is ae_true@yahoo.com For example my son, Alex, won second place in his age group at the January Klein Chess Tournament; his school won third place over all in their division.
