Newsletter - March 2008
"Easter is not a time for groping through dusty, musty tomes or tombs to disprove spontaneous generation or even to prove life eternal. It is a day to fan the ashes of dead hope, a day to banish doubts and seek the slopes where the sun is rising, to revel in the faith which transports us out of ourselves and the dead past into the vast and inviting unknown."
Huntsville UU Services
Please come at 10:00 for coffee and conversation before the service. Coffee will not be served after the service. Post-service conversation will continue over lunch. Sun. March 9: Our speaker will be Glenn Sanford. The title of his talk will be "Science and Religion in the Classroom: The Forty Years Since Epperson."
"In 1968, the U.S. Supreme Court opened U.S. classrooms to evolutionary theory. During the intervening 40 years, numerous efforts have been made to supplant (or augment) evolutionary theory with creationist or intelligent design alternatives. With issues ranging from academic freedom to separation of church and state or freedom of speech to educational quality, this talk will endeavor to introduce a sampling of the case law that has developed in this area."
Dr. Sanford has a B.A. in philosophy from The College of Wooster and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Biology from Duke University. He has been at SHSU for ten years where he is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy. He is the Co-Chair of the National Collegiate Honors Council's Science and Mathematics Committee, and in 2005, he co-authored A Historical Dictionary of the Darwin Controversy with Ken Hendrickson, Ph.D.
Sun. March 30: Rev. Capo's sermon is entitled "What Will I Commit To."
What do Unitarian Universalists commit to for their spiritual growth? Muslims commit to a once in a lifetime Haj; Catholics commit to Confessions and Communions; some Buddhists commit to spending part of their life as a monk or nun. What do Unitarian Universalists commit to for their spiritual growth? What are you willing to commit to for your spiritual growth?
Note that instead of the fourth Sunday of March, Reverend Capo will be preaching on the fifth Sunday of March

A Note from Your Editor, Anne True
Second, because I am not omniscient, people must tell me formally what will be occurring over the next couple of months. I request that this information be in writing, because my memory is not what it used to be. I would like everybody to submit all newsletter information by the twentieth of the preceding month (e.g. March 20th will be the deadline for the April newsletter). This will give me enough time to edit and mail out the Newsletter by the first of the month. If you would like your event to be a recurring notice in the newsletter, please tell me.
Last, I would like to include more personal celebrations in the newsletter. Please let me know if anything really wonderful has happened in your family recently. My email is ae_true@yahoo.com For example my son, Alex, won second place in his age group at the January Klein Chess Tournament; his school won third place over all in their division.
