For Those Not
There
by James Ebb Huggins, Jr.
A table was set for those not
there
With deliberate grace and care.
A celebration that all would recall.
A moment in time all would share.
Each hat was laid in it's appropriate
place.
Each Service was represented there.
They were placed with much pride and seemed to say,
"We gave our all - remember us this day".
The glasses were inverted - they would
not drink,
No toast in honor would they share.
Each glass in it's elegance seemed to say,
"Remember us, until we drink together again one day".
The candles were lit to mark the place,
Where those remembered would not be,
And as they glowed they seemed to say,
"Our place is here with you today."
The salutes were given with ceremonial
grace,
After places were prepared for all.
Each white gloved hand with fingers erect.
Each arm aligned as a symbol of respect.
After the table was secure, a solemn
chaplain came by,
With a book secured close to his chest.
As he laid the book in it's place he prayed,
"God bless them, they have done their best".
