These Littlest of His

by James Ebb Huggins, Jr.

Sugar and Max are two little dogs - that makes one feel real good.
They do real cute things - just as you would expect they should.
They normally look out for each other - which sometimes ends up in a fight,
But always make up in short order - then work hard at making things right.

They perform as a team to get things done - like chasing the squirrel away,
And Max will follow Sugar around the yard - just to idle away the day.
To Max it doesn't matter what happens - as long as Sugar is there,
As he checks out each place she sniffs and wets - an adventure for both to share.

One trick they do that's especially neat - that makes togetherness grow,
Happens each day while they are bring groomed - and it causes happiness to show.
Sugar is brushed first as Max patiently waits - on the sofa so very quiet,
And as soon as her combing has ended - he appears much like a flash of light.

While Max is brushed Sugar goes for food - located in another room
And brings one small piece back to the site - where Max is busy with the groom.
She throws the food into the air - then guards it like it might fly away,
But never eats the morsel she brings - to her mate on that special day.

As soon as Max's grooming is complete - he swoops up the food with delight,
And in an instant the food is all gone - consumed and out of sight.
Why Sugar does this act of concern - is a mystery to ponder with care,
Could it be that she's God's Angel of Love - providing a lesson for all to share?

Wouldn't it be a blessing - if she has been sent as a messenger to remind
Each one who observes this ritual of love - to be considerate, caring, and kind,
To always think of others first - to perform deeds that make relationships glow,
To be aware that these littlest of His - can cause love's flower to grow?
