The Master Teacher

There are many fond memories of joint activities between the Haughton and Parkway AFJROTC. These included camping trips, back-pack ventures, and field training exercises. Since most of the activities were conducted on the weekend, we were very often out on a Sunday. The Chief felt very strongly that thanks to the good Lord was in order even though we were a long way from an organized church service. In order to correct this deficiency, we would routinely conduct improvised services at any location we happened to be on Sunday morning. It was one of the first activities on the Sunday schedule.

The Chief would insist upon student involvement but would normally provide the major reflection for the service. When comparing leadership considerations to how Jesus would react, he pointed out that a good leader has compassion for his  people, just like Jesus had for all. He keeps them out of the sun, he does not eat until they have been fed, and he does not sleep until they have a place to sleep. As he reviewed these major points, I observed the Cadets listening intently to every word. In fact, as he recited the main points, most were quietly saying the words with him. They had learned principals that will impact their lives in the future. They had learned from the a teacher who patterned his entire life after the -- Master Teacher.
