The Regatta
by James Ebb Huggins, Jr.

Allen did it again today - he presented another challenge for all,
Just as he had done in His high school days - when joys and tears would often call.
This time it was a Regatta on the mighty Red - and lots of excitement there would be,
As the streamlined long boats would go flashing by - a wonder for all to see.

Little did I know what  I was getting in to - until the briefing was through,
As the Chief Judge explained the important chores - that everyone had to do
To make the race go, to keep up with things - to make the competition the best,
And as I looked forward to the event - my emotions were not at all put to rest.

There were two things the Chief Judge did not reveal - as the Regatta would begin,
That I will remember with fond recall - and with memories that will never end.

One was that I would stay seven hours on a boat - anchored on the Red,
With no latrine for he and she - a condition that any old man would dread.
Things worked out well though as the day wore on - as support boats would come by
And transport me to the trees on shore - like a paradise in the sky.

The other thing that will remain with me - until my days on earth end
Is the beauty of the eight man boats - with all working hard to send
An image of precision, teamwork and such - a picture of perfection for sure,
As they gracefully passed the finish line -  sending a message that will surely endure
In the minds of those who watched them go by - and the skill they did proudly display,
And all the things that Allen did do -  to cause such a special day.
