I was first licensed in 1976 in Asheboro, N.C. with the call WN4AEC. In the 80's I moved to San Angelo, TX where I became KA5OAI. I became an Advanced class license holder in 1992 and even though I had passed the 20wpm code test, I was having to much fun on 40m SSB, so I didn't progressed to Extra until August of 2009. I dropped the leading A and aquired K5OAI as a vanity call on September 11, 2009.
Most of my activity is QRP CW with some SSB activity. Rigs are the Kenwood TS-450SAT and Elecraft K2. My main band of interest was 40m where I ran a 12' tall Bugcatcher on my apartment's 2nd story tar and gravel roof. Sixteen radials 13' long make it about 50% efficient. For a horizontal on 40m I have a 40m Hamstick dipole at 24 feet.
July 2008 I changed out the single band 40m Bugcatcher for a Hi-Q Antenna model 5/160, now I can work 160m-20m with it. I added a ring around the outer edge of the 16 radials and a single radial each for 160m, 80m, 60m, and 30m. Finally I am back on my favorite band 160. The 13.5 foot tall 5/160 is 1.3% efficient on 160m so my 70w out becomes a powerhouse 900mw signal ERP. Can you say QRPp, hi hi?
As the sunspots return I am now more active on 17m, where I use a 17m Hamstick dipole at 24 feet and a 17m vertical on the roof at 20 feet with Six radials 6 feet long (now also tied into the radial system on the Hi-Q 5/160.
Mostly for receive I use a rectangular shaped horizontal loop cut for a full wavelength for 60m laying on the roof at 20 feet.
October 2009, installed a 138 foot long Hy Power Antennas, shortened fan dipole for 40,80 and 160 meter at 25 feet, (5 foot off the roof). So far it works great for 80m and 40m. It needs some more tuning, so the jury is still out on it's effectiveness on 160m.
