Gelcoat Ding Repair

Are there any other bad sailors like me who have managed to ding the gelcoat on the edge of transom?  Has anyone tried putting a rub rail on that exposed edge?  I have Rae de Sol (#551) and am wondering if I need to custom order gelcoat to repair the dings or if I can just get some white gelcoat repair from West Marine that will match.  Have you any practical suggestions on how to apply the gelcoat on that edge?

I've had several of those dings. Almost makes you think that Hunter has the right idea. Almost.

As long as they are relatively small (maybe 3/8" diameter and 3/16" deep) I fix them with the Quick Fix Gelcoat Patch in the 1/2 oz. tube. It's a little off-white but the color difference isn't noticeable from a few feet away. I've also used Marine-Tex but it is less convenient to use and the results are about the same.

Fill the ding in thin layers and give each layer plenty of time to dry. It will shrink a little as it dries. It isn't as hard as the original gel so it is fairly easy to sand the patched area level with the original finish. Remember to go easy with the sanding though, you can cut through the gel on an edge very quickly.
