Lewmar Winch Repair

The self-tailing stopper broke off in 2 pieces from one of my main winches. It is a black plastic-like triangular piece that says TOP on the top, about the size of a quarter. It is an appendage from within the self tailing recessed black cylinder, behind the stainless finger. Has anyone had a similar problem who can recommend the fix?

Is epoxy glue likely to get me through this season?

Thanks, Rollie Gates

That part is called the "stripper ring" and is fairly easy to access if you have the right winch manual handy to describe the disassembly process.  A service manual that describes the process is availabe at the Lewmar website here:

http://www.lewmar.com/support/PDF/Winch_Service_Manual.zip

This is the same manual that comes with Lewmar's winch servicing kits.  The two pieces that you have in hand are only part of the part that needs to be replaced.  There is another piece (the ring itself) still inside the winch.

You can find a parts diagram for the 30ST two-speed on the Lewmar website here:

Double check that you really need the stripper ring.  It's item 6 in the blowup and Lewmar part number 45000108.  Now contact a Lewmar parts distributor.  Sailnet sells some Lewmar stripper rings but I don't see that particular one on their website.  Maybe if you call them.  The one on Sailnet for the 44ST runs under $15, so yours will be similar or a bit less.

I wouldn't bother with attempted to repair the part.  This part takes a good bit of abuse, and you won't have enough surface area to get a strong bond anyhow.  Also, any rough edges on the repair could abraid your lines.
