Whale Fittings

This afternoon one of the fittings on the plumbing behind the hot water heater and galley drawers let go.  It appears to me that replacement requires removal of the cabinet since there doesn't seem to be enough room to remove and reinstall the fitting with the cabinet installed. Any suggestions on removal would be helpful.  Thanks.

I'm a #488 and a '98 so mine are slightly different but VERY easy to disassemble / assemble once you get the hang of it.  Understand that this is a plumbing system kept "leakless" by "O" rings at each Whale fitting. juncture.

Roger,

When you get down to the "source" of the problem... you will have to undo a whale fitting.

Here is some sage advice from Bill... a while back...

"Whale Fittings

You can download the Whale fittings catalog from their website:

http://www.whalepumps.com/

They are quite simple. Go to west marine and play with their samples if you have an opportunity.

There is a white ring on the outside of the whale connector which spins freely. One edge of this white ring connector is straight, and the other is a little wavy. If you look in the wavy end, there is a tan? washer-like insert around the water pipe. With a finger, screwdriver or otherwise, push IN on this insert, and at the same time, just pull the hose out. Takes a bit of effort.

To reconnect, just push the hose back in. It will just pop in, but push hard again and you'll notice that it seats in deeper and more firmly. That second seating is the key.

Again, the trick is to push IN on that insert inside the ring while pulling the hose out."

The fittings are made by Whale on my boat and they come apart by removing the rear locking ring and them pushing in on the center ring while pulling the hose out.  I think on the newer fittings they did away with the  locking ring.  If you go to http://www.whale.ltd.uk/marine/ and look at their water systems you will see a diagram explaining how the hose connections work.

The valves on my boat (#545) are made by Whale. The part number is either wx1573b or wx1575b. Whale may have discontinued that valve although they still show it on their web site. The new one, wx1574b or wx1576b, is similar but it has a round handle.
