Whisker Pole

Received the invoice copy from Mike:  The work was done by Jeff at Morgan Marine Services, 229 Fishtown Rd, Mystic, CT 06355    PH 860-514-2467.

For Mike's boat Seychelle.

Provide and install spinnaker pole, Pole lift, downhaul, inboard adjustment track, and verticle storage gear.

The material list showed:

Forestar 3" spinaker pole    $600

Heavy duty mast car               260.

Vertical storage car               250

Mast chock                               58

12 ft of 1 1/4 track                  145

then a bunch of fixed blocks, cheek blocks, swivel blocks, cam cleats, line, machine screws, etc

The total material list was $1934. The bill said "provide and Install" so he must have included the labor with each piece part. I do not know if it included labor.

This is a full spinnaker pole setup. I am just looking for a whisker pole set up and have changed my mind re the mast track etc since we will never go for a spinnaker. Maybe an asymetrical at some point, and that doesn't need the mast track, uphaul, downhaul, moveable inboard pole end adjustment up and down, etc. Just a pole with a ring on the mast and two chocks on the deck to secure the pole.

Good luck. Call Jeff Morgan, I spoke to him and he was very nice. Have a local rigger give you some pricing.

BTW look at defender.com, Forespar 407100 adjustable to 17 ft.@ about $400..

It might be enough for us in light air. Checking with Skelley/Ullman who made our genoa.

Also, the Forespar 401106 18’ whisker pole, about $547 at Defender.

Paul: Although the 10-18 pole is long enough to use with the C-320 with a 135% genoa (According to PHRF, a whisker pole can't be any

longer than 12' 4" (the J dimension of our boats), the 12-22 is stronger and will probably give you a better service life.

When I installed the track on the Alchemist, I only used a 1 1/4" x 4' track, used flat head machine screws for the center holes and used hex

head bolts for the top and bottom. AS I recall, the bolts / machine screws were 5/16" x 1 (or 3/4). To guarantee that everything lined up,

I only drilled and tapped the top hole. Once I had done that, I installed the track and used it as a template to drill and tap the

bottom hole. Once that bolt was installed, the remainder of the holes  were dead easy to get perfectly alligned. with my tightly bolted on

template.

Paul:

I had mounted the track using 1/4 flat head SS screws on Proud Mary. I installed the track with the bottom about even with the life lines, as

you will never set it lower that. As it worked out, I have never set it that low when sailing. I am thinking I used a 8' length of track. You

want the top of the track high enough so that you can store the pole completely up against the mast without the outboard end touching the

deck.

The 12-22 is over kill for the C-320. I use a 10 - 18 on a 155 Genoa and have had good success. The LP of a 135 is 16.2 feet. This is the

measurement perpendicular to the luff of the sail, so the distance away from the mast will be less than this distance.

> Allan is checking his mast track location for me, but I thought you might remember what track length you installed and how far off the cabin

top ? How did you mount track to the mast ? Rivets or screws or ?  What pole for a 135 Genoa ? 12-22 ?

> Orlando - It was very easy to deploy the pole when it was deck mounted. I am not totally comfortable yet with deploying from the mast but that

will come with a bit of experience that I hope to get over the next 18 days! -

> Hi Paul - The pole mount was installed by a rigger as I was recovering from disk fusion surgery at the time. So I don't know exactly how he installed but I am sending the parts list under a separate e-mail to you. I think that a 12-22 pole might be too much for a 135; I have a 155 genoa.

Received this from Allen Field.

12’  1.25” T-track (339003)

T-125 Pole Car (334002)

DC-2 Pole Chuck (300002)

Vert Storage Car (335700)

Socket end (304080)

Harken 092

Harken 082

40’ 5/16” StaSet

2 SS eyes

Nylon Cleat

Note its for a spinnaker pole track and fittings that attach to the mast. Its for a spinnaker pole, because I recognise the "socket end" is for the

inboard end of the spinnaker pole and I suspect that the "T-125" is for the outboard pole end. The staset is probably for the pole uphaul and it other parts. I have not been to my office to get the LaChance info yet. It appears that the cost of a whisker pole set up for the mast track only

would be between this and $1000.

Irv - Attached is a parts list for installing the pole on the mast. I had a pro do this as I was coming off back surgery. The pole we have is a

Forespar LC 12-22. Hope this helps! –
